Through the Bible: Obadiah

DAY 1 OF 3

God of All Nations

The pride of your heart has deceived you, you who live in the clefts of the rock, in your lofty dwelling, who say in your heart, “Who will bring me down to the ground?” Though you soar aloft like the eagle, though your nest is set among the stars, from there I will bring you down, declares the Lord.
... All your allies have driven you to your border; those at peace with you have deceived you; they have prevailed against you; those who eat your bread have set a trap beneath you— you have no understanding.
Obadiah 1:3-4, 7 (ESV)

It was a proclamation of judgment against Edom, a neighbouring nation coming out from Esau, the brother of Israel. When Jerusalem fell because of their own unfaithfulness, Edom took pleasure in seeing to the downfall of God’s people. They were confident in being safe with their dwelling being high on the hill. But the Lord God opposes the proud and those who are hostile to His people. Even those who appeared to be their allies one day turned against them and took over the nation.

What seemed to be one’s security comes to nothing in the face of the Lord God Almighty, who is above all. No boundaries, nothing, can stop Him from carrying out His will.

Prayer

Father God, we thank You for being our God who is for us and not against us. Nothing can stop You from fulfilling Your promises. We trust that no matter what we face, Your will will be done on earth as it is in heaven. Thank You, Lord. In Jesus’ name, Amen.

Day 2

About this Plan

Through the Bible: Obadiah

Prophet Obadiah castigated the nation of Edom, Esau’s descendants, as they took advantage of the Israelites, their close relatives when Babylon invaded Jerusalem. Instead of lending a helping hand, the Edomites gloated over, plundered, and even killed the Israelite refugees. This shortest book in the Old Testament ends with the victorious promise that God’s people will be restored and His eternal Kingdom will last forever.
