The Sea Of Instructions
It’s easy to drown in the sea of instructions, commands, and warnings that God gave to His people before they entered the promised land.
But what do we do with them, this side of Jesus? We were not part of the rescued generations of Israelites, whisked out of Egypt for life in a land of milk and honey. What have all these promises and rules got to do with us who are to ‘fulfil the law of Christ’ (Galatians 6:2)?
Reading slowly and carefully through Exodus, Numbers, Leviticus and Deuteronomy can help us live well for God today. These few instructions in Exodus 23, for example, point to Sabbath principles that continue to speak loudly.
Giving the land a break so it’s able to keep providing for us – and to those not as well off – makes more than environmental or agricultural sense. It knits with God’s ongoing refrain about His creation needing refreshment, including us. We were not made to never rest. Even God had time off after He made everything in six days. Why would we be any different?
As you serve God and Jesus, think over what Sabbath rest can look like in your life.
