Through the Bible: MicahSample
What Does God Require of You?
He has shown you, O man, what is good;
And what does the Lord require of you
But to do justly,
To love mercy,
And to walk humbly with your God?
Micah 6:8 (NKJV)
Have you thought of how one pleases God? The answer lies in Micah 6:8, in the best-known passage from the book. It has key words like justice, mercy, and humility that occur frequently throughout Scripture.
God makes clear that sacrifices are of no value, and may even be offensive to Him, if our lives do not reflect the justice, loving kindness, and humility that God expects from us.
Micah 6:8 summaries the threefold Kingdom life:
- Act justly to help the vulnerable with godly sorrow over unrighteousness.
- Love mercy to show genuine active compassion and kindness.
- Walk humbly with God in constant gratitude and reliance on him.
Prayer
Abba Father, may we be Your true followers who take action: “For you were hungry and we gave you food, you were thirsty and we gave you drink, you were a stranger and we welcomed you, you were naked and we clothed you, you were sick and we visited you, you were in prison and we came to you.” In Jesus’ most precious name, Amen.
About this Plan
As a contemporary of Isaiah, Micah makes no bones about the injustice throughout the nation. Despite prophesying judgements, Micah centres the book on promises of the messianic Kingdom where people live in peace by God’s rules. Although Christians don’t normally produce injustice, Micah confronts our apathy to the vulnerable and says, “What does the Lord require of you? To act justly, love mercy and walk humbly with your God.”
