Year of the Bible: Part One of TwelveSample
Babel.
Stop here and read today's scriptures.
God does not appreciate self-righteousness and selfish ambition. Sometimes, it's easy to believe that our self-centered efforts bring some Glory to God. However, our self-propelled efforts do not highlight God's goodness but our own.
Question: What sin do you think humans committed against God at Babel?
Prayer Focus: Examine your life. Have you ever committed the same sin against God? Take a moment to intentionally give God credit for what He has done in your life.
Go Deeper: Making a name for ourselves focuses on us instead of God. We exist to bring Glory to God, and He alone deserves His name to be known. The people were working together to establish fame for themselves, and God knew that their unified effort to do the wrong thing would lead to a terrible outcome.
He confused their languages to prevent further damage and selfishness. He also knew that He would more fully populate the earth in scattering the people. God doesn't waste anything, even our foolish ambitions. He is creative and makes beauty from our bad choices.
