The Reign of the Lord’s Anointed KingSample

The Reign of the Lord’s Anointed King

DAY 8 OF 8

Kiss the Son

In the ancient world, the kiss was the manner of paying homage to a king. A kiss was a token of allegiance. It symbolized drawing near to the royal presence in friendship. The Psalmist implores the rebellious pagan kings of this world to lay down their arms and make peace with the LORD’s anointed Son, who reigns from the throne of Jerusalem. He calls them to kiss the Son and swear allegiance to him. Failure to make peace with the Son is a fatal mistake; for it means that one is in a state of war against God and his beloved Davidic King. Such folly results in complete destruction. The Son will not always extend his olive branch of peace. There comes a time when his patience will run out and his wrath is quickly kindled. Then all rebels will perish in the way. The King will not tolerate obstinate rebellion forever, since it is an insult to his glory. Only those who kiss the Son, seeking His peace will be blessed for they will find refuge in a merciful King.

Jesus as the divinely anointed Davidic King offers terms of peace to rebellious sinners today! He calls us to renounce our sins and kiss him in friendship. While hypocrites offer the kiss of Judas, the faithful kiss the blessed King in worship and adoration. If we fail to submit to the Lordship of Jesus, we will perish. Sinners cannot withstand the perfect justice of God when the Son judges the world in righteousness. Therefore, come now and embrace your king who seeks friendship with you today. Stop resisting this loving King who offers mercy and peace. All you have to do is boldly approach King Jesus’ throne of grace in faith.

The church is entrusted to proclaim this good news, that the Son of God offers peace to warring sinners. This truth is to be proclaimed to the heathen nations. The church is to call rebels to be wise and escape destruction by seeking refuge in Christ Jesus. This is to be blessed eternally! This message, however, is an existential threat to the powers that are who refuse to submit to Christ’s holy rule. Therefore, they reject the gospel. These anti-God elements rage against the church, which is the body of Christ. However, it is in vain. King Jesus reigns on high and none can shake his eternal Kingdom!
