Perfect Love
But you are to be perfect, even as your Father in heaven is perfect. –Matthew 5:48 NLT
This verse can seem quite daunting. However, in this context, “perfect” doesn’t mean flawless or without sin, because that’s impossible for any human. We all make mistakes. Perfect in this verse means “finished, complete, pure, holy.” When we are born again, God makes us complete through His Son, our Lord Jesus. He gives us the power to love people like He does—wholly, unconditionally, and unendingly.
This perfect love is not contingent on having to be a “perfect” mom. Your words and actions will have a much greater impact on your children than a decorated house, designer clothing, or expensive toys. Ask the Lord to show you His heart for your children and for the people in your life. Choose to love them as God loves you.
I once spoke with a woman who was experiencing a difficult situation with her adult child. She was frustrated and overwhelmed, and she questioned every parenting decision she had ever made. As a mom I understood her pain and confusion. I’ve experienced the same doubts and felt the same sting of inadequacy.
While she spoke, the Lord gave me a wonderful picture of encouragement to share. I said, “None of us get ‘being Mom’ perfectly.” I asked her to imagine making a list of all the things she believed she had done wrong. Then I said, “Imagine the hand of God dipping a huge paint brush at the foot the cross where the blood of Jesus was flowing down. See the Lord taking that blood-soaked brush and swiping it up and down over that list of mistakes.” I went on to encourage her that all our past, current, and future failings are covered by the blood of Jesus.
Every mom (including me!) needs to hear that encouragement and anchor it in her heart. Motherhood can be hard sometimes, and so can life in general. Sickness. Rebellion. Drugs. Pornography. Anger. Divorce. Death. The list goes on and on. Whatever your situation may be, God is there for you, and His love for you is never-ending. His love is truly perfect.
Let's Pray
Thank You, Father, that You are a constant source of love and strength. Even in those days or weeks or seasons when circumstances may be difficult, I can rest assured that You will always be there for me. Nothing can ever separate me from Your love. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
