Enforcing You: Standing on the Promises of GodSample
When Jesus came to the region of Caesarea Philippi, he asked his disciples, “Who do people say the Son of Man is?” They replied, “Some say John the Baptist; others say Elijah; and still others, Jeremiah or one of the prophets.” “But what about you?” he asked. “Who do you say I am?” Matthew 16: 13-15
I find it interesting that the disciples, when asked who Jesus was, gave answers based on what others had told them. They could not say who HE was based on their own experience with Him.
I work with many teens who go to church and are raised in God-believing homes, and when I ask them who Jesus is, they answer much the way the disciples did. They will tell me what they have learned in youth or what they have learned from their small group leader, but they cannot tell me who Jesus has been to them personally. The same is true for many adults I have worked with. We are quick to recite things we have heard through podcasts or share stories about friends or quote the pastor, but when asked, “But what about you? Who do you say that He is?” we often don’t have an answer. Isn’t it true that many of us have lived our lives based on the words, teachings, or experiences of others?
In this passage, Simon Peter was able to answer, calling Jesus “the Messiah, the Son of God.” Jesus replies by blessing him but then stating that the answer was not revealed to him by flesh and blood but rather by God Himself.
What does it look like for you to seek a revelation of who God is for yourself? I am not saying that God cannot or does not reveal Himself through man, but if that is all you have, you are missing out! Move beyond what people say about who God is and discover Him for yourself. And remember, the more you discover Him, the more you will discover YOU.
Let’s declare this together. “God, I want to know who You are for myself. I NEED to discover You, and I NEED a fresh revelation from heaven. I declare that the more I am confident in who You are, the more I will be confident in who I am. In Jesus’ name, amen.”
