Getting to Know the ProphetsSample

Daniel
In ancient pagan culture, a foreign army’s conquering of a city signified that the gods of the conquering army were more powerful than the gods of the conquered. This was the assessment when Babylon conquered Israel. Where was the God of the Jews? Had He surrendered His authority? No. Daniel demonstrates God had not surrendered His authority.
In Daniel 2, Nebuchadnezzar had a dream that Daniel interpreted. Destruction of the kingdom was prophesied, and the security of God's reign was decreed, demonstrating God was still active among the people.
Chapter 4 describes Nebuchadnezzar’s humiliation after failing to give glory to God. Because of his pride, God drove him out to the field, where he displayed the characteristics of a wild ox (Daniel 4:32). God did this so the king would know the true ruler of the earth, God Most High.
Finally, Daniel 6 deals with King Belshazzar. God demonstrated His prominence in sending a message of warning that could only be interpreted by Daniel. The interpretation (Daniel 6:24–28) was the destruction of Belshazzar’s kingdom. That very night, Belshazzar died, and King Darius took his place.
Daniel reminds us that God, alone, holds all authority and a permanent kingdom that will never end. All authority belongs to God.
1. In what ways are you challenged to question God’s authority?
2. How can you submit to God’s rule in your own life?
Prayer: God, thank You that You are trustworthy and that all power belongs to You.
