Why is Truth Important?

A few years ago there was a film released called “Brian Banks.” It was about a high school footballer who, on the cusp of signing on to the Atlanta Falcons NFL football team, was falsely accused and imprisoned for rape. He served six years for a crime he did not commit and fought a long battle to be finally exonerated of all wrongdoing. His imprisonment highlighted failures in the justice system, failures in the investigation, failures in ignoring vital evidence, and poor legal advice from his own counsel.

Basically, it was a failure to find the truth that caused him to be wrongfully imprisoned. It is for circumstances like this that the truth is so important.

Before coming to Christ we too were imprisoned. Our prison may not have been visible as was the one for Brian Banks, but we were imprisoned behind bars of sin, guilt, and condemnation with no way to get out.

The key to opening our prison door is the same as the key that would have prevented Brian Banks being wrongfully imprisoned. The key is in finding the truth, and the truth is in Jesus. When we come to God through Jesus and find the truth, we are set free.

God seeks people who will draw near to Him in the truth and who worship Him is Spirit and truth. (see John 4:23-24). It is the followers of the truth who will receive the gifts and blessings of God.

As we speak and grow in the truth, it will lead us to salvation and eventually, to eternal life (see Ephesians 1:13-14). All of the hopes that we hold in Jesus Christ exist because of the truth and our hope is in the truth.

So, this is why the truth is important. It protects us, sustains us, keeps us from danger and false accusation, and in the end leads us to life in Jesus Christ.

Are you seeking the truth or simply going along with the crowd? Study the words of Christ in the Bible and you will find the truth. Everyone has to find it for themselves. We cannot rely on others to do it for us.
