Sometimes whole-life discipleship looks like coming alongside others.

I’m a carpenter and joiner. I’ve always enjoyed working with wood, and over the years, I’ve worked with a wide range of tradesmen and clients, many of whom have become close friends. Being totally honest about my struggles with my mental health has meant many men have felt comfortable sharing likewise with me. This has resulted in mutual trust and friendship, where I can encourage them through difficult times and share my faith with them.

I find the pressure to conform to the workplace culture is very strong. In a predominantly male-dominated sector, where banter, coarse joking, swearing, and bullying have been the norm, I have often found it hard to resist the urge to join in.

I think the things I do and don't do stand out and make an impact. I drink very little; I don't swear, I don't stand around chatting for hours, and I try and avoid gossip. Instead, I encourage others. I don't steal or lie, and I am honest and take responsibility for my mistakes. I try to be friendly, respectful, and kind to everyone, regardless of their position, background, or age. I recently made every effort to learn some Polish and engage with my Polish colleagues. This spoke volumes to them.

By coming alongside people who feel hurt and broken and encouraging and uplifting them, I have seen God work in their lives. I’ve even been given some nicknames, which I find very affirming. Father David, Reverend, and The Rev have all stuck over the years.

Reflection

David has seen the truth of Ecclesiastes 4:9-10:

‘Two are better than one… if either of them falls down, one can help the other up.’

He has given and received help from his colleagues. Many have become friends, and God has worked through his honesty about his struggles and his openness about his faith.

David is also honest that, although he doesn’t always make the right decisions, he tries to mold the culture around him for good. This approach, coupled with his good work, must surely win him more than the reputation of being ‘the Rev’ – it will have won him connections and some extra business over the years.

Prayer

Lord, I don’t want to take it for granted when the tasks in front of me bring joy. Thank You for those days. I pray for those experiencing the opposite – may You surprise them with blessing today. Help me know when to pray in silence for a friend or colleague and when to offer prayer. Thank You that You so often use our struggles to help us bring Your comfort to others.
