Your identity and destiny

Have you ever noticed how human beings ache for (1) an identity and (2) a destiny? We try to figure out who we are, where we belong, and the purpose of our lives. How about you? Do you know who you are and why you are here?

Perhaps that’s why I find the Christian faith so intriguing. Through the name of Jesus, every Christian is given (1) a beautiful identity and (2) a thrilling destiny. Hebrews says, “Therefore, holy brothers and sisters, who share in the heavenly calling, fix your thoughts on Jesus” (3:1).

Who are you? You are a holy member of the family of our Father. You aren’t average, mediocre, or unimpressive but “holy” because the Holy One shed his holy blood to make you as holy as he is. You don’t need to be popular, famous, or known by your next-door neighbor to be someone special because you are someone to our Father in heaven. You are his beloved child.

And you have a destiny. You “share in the heavenly calling,” meaning that God has called you to join him in heaven and, until that day comes, to bring a glimpse of heaven’s love here to Earth. You don’t need to be a pastor or start a business or launch a nonprofit to fulfill your destiny because your destiny is simply to love others until you see the face of the One who loved you before the creation of the world.
