It Doesn’t Make SenseSample
When God’s commands don’t make sense
Which command of God doesn’t make sense to you?
The servants at a wedding in Cana must’ve been confused by Jesus’ command. You can read the whole story in John chapter 2, but some wedding hosts ran out of wine. Jesus’ plan to fix this was to have six stone jars filled with water. Why? Water isn’t wine. And Jesus wanted a lot of water. Each jar held about 25 gallons, so that’s 150 gallons! The servants walked across town, maybe out of town, to haul about 1,200 pounds of water. That’s a lot of trips. That’s plenty of time to realize this didn’t make sense! Then Jesus told them to scoop a cup and present it as wine to the one person who could fire them. They did what Jesus said because Jesus does what he says. Jesus turned the water into wine. What couldn’t be, was . . . because Jesus was involved.
What does Jesus say to you and me? “Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest” (Matthew 11:28). Go to Jesus with your pain and problems. Go to Jesus with your worry, your fears, and your anxiety. Go to Jesus when life doesn’t make sense, and you don’t know what to do. He promises you rest. That doesn’t mean he promises the pain will leave, but he promises he will give peace in the pain, perspective to the problems, and the rest you so desperately need. He will. Because Jesus does what he says he’ll do.
