Breaking Free From DepressionSample
God’s Prescription
This week, we’ve unpacked depression through both psychological and spiritual lenses. It is both a mental condition and a spiritual battle. Considering how God designed us – mind, body, emotions, and spirit intertwined – we shouldn’t consider that both/and a contradiction. Instead, we should consider it the key to effectively pursuing healing.
Did you know the Greek word for salvation in the New Testament also means healing or freedom? God sent Jesus to bring us salvation, and that salvation is not just for your spirit. It is healing for your whole self – body, mind, emotions, and spirit restored to harmony in relationship with the Father.
That healing will never be complete for anyone in this life. Until Jesus returns, we all will deal with the difficulties of life in a fallen world. But, by God’s grace and the Holy Spirit’s work within us, we can grow in increasing wholeness as we follow Jesus.
An important part of following Jesus that does not get enough attention is faithfully stewarding our physical health. We serve God and love our neighbours with our body, and our physical habits have a significant impact on our mental and emotional health. Research has proven that maintaining a healthy diet, regularly exercising, prioritizing 8-hours of sleep, and refraining from drug and alcohol abuse goes a long way on our journey toward healing. Consider these practices a part of your faithful discipleship to Christ.
Finally, if you find yourself struggling with a mental condition, ask for help! The Christian life is not meant to be walked alone, consider finding a local church community that you can join and build relationships in. There is also no shame in seeking professional support. Licensed therapists and counsellors can help you change your negative thought patterns and decision-making processes so that the Lord can go to work renewing your mind.
