I Want to Grow

DAY 2 OF 4

I want to be more generous, less selfish.

Everybody, and I mean everybody, at every age, at every income level, at every rung of the personal balance sheet ladder has a reason not to be a giver. You can claim poverty, youth, debts, growing family, mortgage and auto loan payments, business exposure, impending retirement, fixed income, and many other reasons, and you can talk yourself into holding on to every dime.

It seems like an iron law of economic logic: the more I give, the less I will have. The less I give, the more I will have. Logical, but false. Completely false, because it defies God’s structure of economic convection.

God himself is incredibly generous. He pours love and mercy and resources into people's lives, and when his generosity ignites a fire in people’s lives and they become generous, he sends them even more! Seriously! “One person gives freely, yet gains even more; another withholds unduly, but comes to poverty. A generous person will prosper; whoever refreshes others will be refreshed.” (Proverbs 11:24,25)

What makes God’s generosity convection system work is that it’s not a closed system. He enjoys injecting more resources into the lives of his children. He’s a God of abundance, not scarcity. He loves it when you trust his word and expect his promises. He loves it when you and I show the same generosity toward other people that he has shown to us.

Say it with me: the more I give, the more I have.
