Declutter: Overhaul Your HeartSample
ACCOUNTABILITY
In the decluttering process, you may find you need some help. It’s ok to reach out to another human. Coming into accountability increases your chances of success. That’s why accountability helps declutter your heart.
Maybe some of the gunk buildup in your heart stems from severe trauma like death, divorce, or addiction. There is no shame if you need help from a professional soul-declutterer—counselor, therapist, pastor, or doctor. Working through big traumas and complex situations may require some extra help.
It’s good to bring trusted friends or family into this process. When we are doing challenging internal work like decluttering our hearts, we need our people around us to help raise our arms when we get tired, pray for us, encourage us, and check in with us to see if we are making progress.
James 5:16 talks about the spiritual accountability between believers and how it is linked to our healing. It says, Therefore, confess your sins to one another and pray for one another, that you may be healed. The prayer of a righteous person has great power as it is working. (ESV)
We can’t be accountable to just anyone, though.
A relationship with someone we trust is a key to accountability. We need someone who has our best interests at heart and will speak truth in love to us. Some may abuse this trust, so proceed with caution when seeking accountability.
If we know someone will be asking how our cleaning out process is going fairly regularly, we are more likely to keep going. And the further we go, the more we grow. The better our soul begins to look and the healthier we get from the inside out.
Getting rid of the rubbish and rubble from our hearts brings healing to other areas too. When our hearts start working better, so do our thoughts and words.
It’s time to come clean and get into accountability.
Action: Consider who would be a good accountability partner for you. Whether a friend or a professional, take action and reach out today. If you don’t know who yet, ask God to point you in the right direction.
Prayer: Healing God, thank you for putting people in my life who will pray for me and hold me accountable! Please send me people who will support this decluttering journey in healthy and positive ways. I am excited to work on things your way and be in community with people who will help hold me accountable. Thank you for showing me the way. In Jesus' name, amen.
