When You're Feeling Spiritually BlahSample
Key #3 – Break Out of the Rut
You’ve probably heard the definition of insanity as “doing the same thing over and over but expecting different results.” I don’t know about you, but nothing makes me feel more blah than tedium doing the same thing over and over. It always helps me to switch things up a little – do something new!
Think of ways to change up some of the tedium in your life and shake off those blahs. What can you do differently today? It doesn’t have to be something big. Maybe drive a different way to work or the store. Have your coffee outside instead of inside. Call a friend and get together. Go somewhere you haven’t been in a while.
One great way to break out of your rut is to go outside. I know that sounds simple, but we unintentionally live so much of our lives indoors, which can affect our bodies and emotions. God created this earth for our enjoyment! When you go out into it, it can shake off the cobwebs and ignite your soul. We only need to read Psalm 8 to consider the vast work of God's hands and "the moon and the stars, which He has ordained" to cry out "O Lord, our Lord, How excellent is Your name in all the earth!"
New research shows that spending time outside has significant and wide-ranging health benefits. Exposure to fresh air and green space reduces the risk of type II diabetes, cardiovascular disease, premature death, preterm birth, stress, and high blood pressure. If it helps all those physical ailments, I know it also helps our mental and emotional well-being. Psalm 19:1 says, "The heavens declare the glory of God; And the firmament shows His handiwork." It's hard to stay "blah" after reading those verses and being outside in God's wonderful creation.
So go for a walk! Or a bike ride, or drive to your local park with all your windows down. Change up your routine. Come up with your own rut-breaking activity. When I break out of my daily routine rut, I get a fresh perspective, fresh ideas, and the blahs flee. Go for it.
