Should I Fear Ghosts and Evil Spirits?

DAY 4 OF 8

It’s forbidden to consult the dead or spirits

“There shall not be found among you anyone who [...] practices divination or tells fortunes or interprets omens, or a sorcerer or a charmer or a medium or a necromancer or one who inquires of the dead, for whoever does these things is an abomination to the Lord.” (Deuteronomy 18:10-12)

It’s attractive to know what will happen in the future. We try to predict the weather to know whether we should take an umbrella with us. We try to predict how the stock market will be doing so we can gain as much money as possible. How great would it be to know details about our own future as well?!

The people who lived in the land of Canaan practiced all kinds of occult practices to find out about their future. Deuteronomy 18 lists several of these practices and concludes: “Whoever does these things is an abomination to the LORD”. God does not allow us to consult the spirits of the dead or other supernatural powers besides Him. As He says in Deuteronomy 18:15, His people are to listen to His prophets, who will tell them all they need to know and whose information is reliable and true. Nowadays, much of the prophets’ sayings are recorded in the Bible, writings that were inspired by God. These are the words we need to pay attention to! We should not turn to the dead or to evil spirits, but to the Living God. He won’t reveal to us everything we’d like to know. But He does reveal us everything we need to know.
