Anchorage: The Storm of Fear | Part 2 of 8Sample

Fear Gives Power to Your Problems
Oftentimes we are gripped with fear when we find ourselves in a situation we cannot completely comprehend. We, as humans, always tend to make sense of things through what we know. But the fact that we know so little about the things that happen around us makes life difficult. We try to make ourselves believe that we are in control of the situation while, in reality, we know we are far from it. This is where fear creeps in. And that fear only ends up giving more power to our problems. Because, all of a sudden, they look larger than they really are!
In Mark 4, Jesus taught on the power of our words said in faith. That same day, as if to test the disciples on what they had learned, He gave a pop quiz. “Let us cross over to the other side,” He said, standing beside the sea. This, in fact, was the Word of God speaking a promise that they will cross over to the other side. When the storm began to rage, they nonetheless found themselves struck with fear. Jesus hadn’t fallen asleep out of carelessness, but was able to sleep because He had already done His part! He’d released the promise that they would make it to the other side, and it was now the disciples’ turn to agree with that Word, press through the storm by faith, and reach the other side.
Your fear gives power to your problems, and can even make them appear much larger than they truly are. At such times, make sure to remind yourself of God’s promises. Press on through the storm, because His promise remains that you will indeed cross over to the other side!
Reflection
Write down one storm, no matter how big or small, that you are currently going through in life. Ask the Holy Spirit to help you imagine Jesus saying ‘Let us cross over to the other side’ even before your storm began. How does this make you feel? By faith, what do you imagine the ‘other side’ looks like?
