Anchored in Hope: Readings From the New Testament

DAY 4 OF 5

Reflect on today’s reading using these questions:

  • What does the word “decay” or “corruption” mean in this passage?
  • How can hope help us in the midst of suffering?

Groaning for Glory

All creation experiences the effects of suffering and pain. Forests dwindle, oceans are polluted, animals face extinction, and bodies undergo sickness and affliction. Like a mother in labor, the earth is groaning in agony because of the consequences of sin (8:22). Yet even as we groan, we also experience a joyful hope in the coming redemption (8:24). This hope is based on God’s promise that suffering and loss will not continue forever, and that God will redeem and resurrect creation. This hope helps us endure adversity as we can eagerly anticipate future glory.

Reflect on your story:

  • Even creation sets its hope on the day it will be free from death and decay. Can you imagine that glorious day when creation is set free? What do you think it will look like?
  • We too, look forward to the day when we will receive our full rights as adopted children and bodies free from suffering. What is it that you are waiting for with patience and confidence?

About this Plan

Anchored in Hope: Readings From the New Testament

We often hope in the world around us—for a promotion, a better relationship, a stronger family, and recovery of the sick. But trusting only in earthly outcomes will fail us. The Bible says we will experience loss and disappointment on earth, but we are held in God’s eternal love. On this plan, you will learn about God’s care for you and see how spiritual hope can bring strength amid life’s storms.
