Not a One and Done

DAY 3 OF 3

Farming is about planting. Seeds and soil. And a seed planted in good soil with a great water source will become a blessing to others and, like a deep-rooted tree, bear a lot of fruit!

Trees are actually very hungry plants. They’re constantly pushing out new branches, extending old branches, developing leaf buds, and sprouting new flowers that turn into fruit. All this growth requires a good food source and constant nutrition.

If we want to be a deeply rooted spiritual tree, then we need a healthy diet - lots of good spiritual truths to consider, savor, and feast on! And our source for the nourishment is the Bible, God’s Word.

But feasting without exercise leads to unhealthiness. We spiritually exercise by applying God’s Word to our lives. The book of James challenges us to be people who do what the Bible says, not just listen or read it.

Today’s reading comes from the longest chapter in Scripture - Psalm 119. Written by King David, it’s a lot to feast on in one sitting. But if you break it up into bite-sized chunks, there’s a great meal in each of its 22 sections - one section for each letter of the Hebrew alphabet.

Try digging in for yourself and study one of the 22 sections. As you read it, notice how God’s instructions impacted the author’s life - how King David approached God’s laws and prioritized the Scriptures.

Start by reading and finish by doing - feeding and applying, feasting, and exercising. You’re on your way to growing and drawing closer to God!

Consider: What effect or result did God’s instructions have on the Psalmist’s life? How did the author describe it?

Reflect: Use the SOAP Bible study method on today’s passage for a deeper reflection on Psalm 119. SOAP stands for Scripture, Observation, Application, and Prayer.

  1. Scripture: Choose a Scripture or passage that you want to read and highlight it in your Bible or Bible App.
  2. Observation: Make Observations about the passage. (For example, what does it say, teach or warn of?)
  3. Application: How will you apply this truth to your life? What steps can you take? What changes do you need to make?
  4. Prayer: Respond to God with prayer.
Day 2

About this Plan

Not a One and Done

The Bible is not a "one and done." It is not a book you read once, or just a little bit of, and put back on the shelf to gather dust or read again on a rainy day. In this 3-day Bible Plan, you will see and explore how the Bible was written for us to encounter God through life-long, transformative reading within the context of the community of God’s people and with the help of the Holy Spirit. This 3-day Bible Plan is part 4 of 4 designed to go along with the Catechism 'The Big Story' small group series.
