God's Name: Devotions From Time Of GraceSample

Missed Use?
When I was a teenager, my mom would always give me the same speech before going out: “No drinking, no smoking, no sex, no drugs.” Looking back, I understand why she chose those four. It only takes one night of drunken driving or one act of sex to change a life forever.
But what about God’s top ten? No murder, no adultery, no idolatry. I get those. But no “misusing the name of the LORD your God” (Exodus 20:7)? Is that really worthy one of the top spots?
Absolutely. Here’s why--The biggest misuse of God’s name is the missed use of God’s name, when Jesus’ name isn’t used at all. When we wallow in sin and shame instead of calling on his name. When we feel lonely instead of thinking of the One who promised to be with us always. When we believe our work is worthless despite the promises of the God who said our labor would never be in vain. When we don’t think of God at all, when we miss using his name, we misuse his name.
Please do not forget the glorious name of our God. The Lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world. The compassionate Father who is close to the brokenhearted. The Groom who pursues and woos and proposes to live with his Bride in spiritual sickness and health. Think deeply about your Savior, Redeemer, and Friend, and you’ll know why your Father never wanted you to go out without a reminder of his holy name.
