         <div class="label">20</div><div class="s1"><span class="heading">The Empty Tomb</span></div><div class="p"><span class="verse v1" data-usfm="JHN.20.1"><span class="label">1</span><span class="content">Early on the first day of the week, while it was still dark, Mary Magdalene went to the tomb and saw that the stone had been removed from the entrance. </span></span><span class="verse v2" data-usfm="JHN.20.2"><span class="label">2</span><span class="content">So she came running to Simon Peter and the other disciple, the one Jesus loved, and said, &#8220;They have taken the Lord out of the tomb, and we don&#8217;t know where they have put him!&#8221;</span></span></div><div class="p"><span class="verse v2" data-usfm="JHN.20.2"></span><span class="verse v3" data-usfm="JHN.20.3"><span class="label">3</span><span class="content">So Peter and the other disciple started for the tomb. </span></span><span class="verse v4" data-usfm="JHN.20.4"><span class="label">4</span><span class="content">Both were running, but the other disciple outran Peter and reached the tomb first. </span></span><span class="verse v5" data-usfm="JHN.20.5"><span class="label">5</span><span class="content">He bent over and looked in at the strips of linen lying there but did not go in. </span></span><span class="verse v6" data-usfm="JHN.20.6"><span class="label">6</span><span class="content">Then Simon Peter came along behind him and went straight into the tomb. He saw the strips of linen lying there, </span></span><span class="verse v7" data-usfm="JHN.20.7"><span class="label">7</span><span class="content">as well as the cloth that had been wrapped around Jesus&#8217; head. The cloth was still lying in its place, separate from the linen. </span></span><span class="verse v8" data-usfm="JHN.20.8"><span class="label">8</span><span class="content">Finally the other disciple, who had reached the tomb first, also went inside. He saw and believed. </span></span><span class="verse v9" data-usfm="JHN.20.9"><span class="label">9</span><span class="content">(They still did not understand from Scripture that Jesus had to rise from the dead.) </span></span><span class="verse v10" data-usfm="JHN.20.10"><span class="label">10</span><span class="content">Then the disciples went back to where they were staying.</span></span></div><div class="s1"><span class="heading">Jesus Appears to Mary Magdalene</span></div><div class="p"><span class="verse v10" data-usfm="JHN.20.10"></span><span class="verse v11" data-usfm="JHN.20.11"><span class="label">11</span><span class="content">Now Mary stood outside the tomb crying. As she wept, she bent over to look into the tomb </span></span><span class="verse v12" data-usfm="JHN.20.12"><span class="label">12</span><span class="content">and saw two angels in white, seated where Jesus&#8217; body had been, one at the head and the other at the foot.</span></span></div><div class="p"><span class="verse v12" data-usfm="JHN.20.12"></span><span class="verse v13" data-usfm="JHN.20.13"><span class="label">13</span><span class="content">They asked her, &#8220;Woman, why are you crying?&#8221;</span></span></div><div class="p"><span class="verse v13" data-usfm="JHN.20.13"><span class="content">&#8220;They have taken my Lord away,&#8221; she said, &#8220;and I don&#8217;t know where they have put him.&#8221; </span></span><span class="verse v14" data-usfm="JHN.20.14"><span class="label">14</span><span class="content">At this, she turned around and saw Jesus standing there, but she did not realize that it was Jesus.</span></span></div><div class="p"><span class="verse v14" data-usfm="JHN.20.14"></span><span class="verse v15" data-usfm="JHN.20.15"><span class="label">15</span><span class="content">He asked her, </span><span class="wj"><span class="content">&#8220;Woman, why are you crying? Go instead to my brothers and tell them, &#8216;I am ascending to my Father and your Father, to my God and your God.&#8217;&#8198;&#8221;</span></span></span></div><div class="p"><span class="verse v17" data-usfm="JHN.20.17"></span><span class="verse v18" data-usfm="JHN.20.18"><span class="label">18</span><span class="content">Mary Magdalene went to the disciples with the news: &#8220;I have seen the Lord!&#8221; And she told them that he had said these things to her.</span></span></div><div class="s1"><span class="heading">Jesus Appears to His Disciples</span></div><div class="p"><span class="verse v18" data-usfm="JHN.20.18"></span><span class="verse v19" data-usfm="JHN.20.19"><span class="label">19</span><span class="content">On the evening of that first day of the week, when the disciples were together, with the doors locked for fear of the Jewish leaders, Jesus came and stood among them and said, </span><span class="wj"><span class="content">&#8220;Peace be with you!&#8221;</span></span><span class="content"> </span></span><span class="verse v20" data-usfm="JHN.20.20"><span class="label">20</span><span class="content">After he said this, he showed them his hands and side. The disciples were overjoyed when they saw the Lord.</span></span></div><div class="p"><span class="verse v20" data-usfm="JHN.20.20"></span><span class="verse v21" data-usfm="JHN.20.21"><span class="label">21</span><span class="content">Again Jesus said, </span><span class="wj"><span class="content">&#8220;Peace be with you! As the Father has sent me, I am sending you.&#8221;</span></span><span class="content"> </span></span><span class="verse v22" data-usfm="JHN.20.22"><span class="label">22</span><span class="content">And with that he breathed on them and said, </span><span class="wj"><span class="content">&#8220;Receive the Holy Spirit.</span></span><span class="content"> </span></span><span class="verse v23" data-usfm="JHN.20.23"><span class="label">23</span><span class="wj"><span class="content">If you forgive anyone&#8217;s sins, their sins are forgiven; if you do not forgive them, they are not forgiven.&#8221;</span></span></span></div><div class="s1"><span class="heading">Jesus Appears to Thomas</span></div><div class="p"><span class="verse v23" data-usfm="JHN.20.23"></span><span class="verse v24" data-usfm="JHN.20.24"><span class="label">24</span><span class="content">Now Thomas (also known as Didymus</span><span class="note f"><span class="label">#</span><span class="body"><span class="fr">20:24 </span><span class="fq">Thomas </span><span class="ft">(Aramaic) and </span><span class="fq">Didymus </span><span class="ft">(Greek) both mean </span><span class="fqa">twin.</span></span></span><span class="content">), one of the Twelve, was not with the disciples when Jesus came. </span></span><span class="verse v25" data-usfm="JHN.20.25"><span class="label">25</span><span class="content">So the other disciples told him, &#8220;We have seen the Lord!&#8221;</span></span></div><div class="p"><span class="verse v25" data-usfm="JHN.20.25"><span class="content">But he said to them, &#8220;Unless I see the nail marks in his hands and put my finger where the nails were, and put my hand into his side, I will not believe.&#8221;</span></span></div><div class="p"><span class="verse v25" data-usfm="JHN.20.25"></span><span class="verse v26" data-usfm="JHN.20.26"><span class="label">26</span><span class="content">A week later his disciples were in the house again, and Thomas was with them. They will be called the Wicked Land, a people always under the wrath of the </span><span class="nd"><span class="content">Lord</span></span><span class="content">. </span></span><span class="verse v5" data-usfm="MAL.1.5"><span class="label">5</span><span class="content">You will see it with your own eyes and say, &#8216;Great is the </span><span class="nd"><span class="content">Lord</span></span><span class="content">&#8212;even beyond the borders of Israel!&#8217;</span></span></div><div class="s1"><span class="heading">Breaking Covenant Through Blemished Sacrifices</span></div><div class="p"><span class="verse v5" data-usfm="MAL.1.5"></span><span class="verse v6" data-usfm="MAL.1.6"><span class="label">6</span><span class="content">&#8220;A son honors his father, and a slave his master. If I am a father, where is the honor due me? If I am a master, where is the respect due me?&#8221; says the </span><span class="nd"><span class="content">Lord</span></span><span class="content"> Almighty.</span></span></div><div class="p"><span class="verse v6" data-usfm="MAL.1.6"><span class="content">&#8220;It is you priests who show contempt for my name.</span></span></div><div class="p"><span class="verse v6" data-usfm="MAL.1.6"><span class="content">&#8220;But you ask, &#8216;How have we shown contempt for your name?&#8217;</span></span></div><div class="p"><span class="verse v6" data-usfm="MAL.1.6"></span><span class="verse v7" data-usfm="MAL.1.7"><span class="label">7</span><span class="content">&#8220;By offering defiled food on my altar.</span></span></div><div class="p"><span class="verse v7" data-usfm="MAL.1.7"><span class="content">&#8220;But you ask, &#8216;How have we defiled you?&#8217;</span></span></div><div class="p"><span class="verse v7" data-usfm="MAL.1.7"><span class="content">&#8220;By saying that the </span><span class="nd"><span class="content">Lord</span></span><span class="content">&#8217;s table is contemptible. </span></span><span class="verse v8" data-usfm="MAL.1.8"><span class="label">8</span><span class="content">When you offer blind animals for sacrifice, is that not wrong? When you sacrifice lame or diseased animals, is that not wrong? Try offering them to your governor! Would he be pleased with you? Would he accept you?&#8221; says the </span><span class="nd"><span class="content">Lord</span></span><span class="content"> Almighty.</span></span></div><div class="p"><span class="verse v8" data-usfm="MAL.1.8"></span><span class="verse v9" data-usfm="MAL.1.9"><span class="label">9</span><span class="content">&#8220;Now plead with God to be gracious to us. With such offerings from your hands, will he accept you?&#8221;&#8212;says the </span><span class="nd"><span class="content">Lord</span></span><span class="content"> Almighty.</span></span></div><div class="p"><span class="verse v9" data-usfm="MAL.1.9"></span><span class="verse v10" data-usfm="MAL.1.10"><span class="label">10</span><span class="content">&#8220;Oh, that one of you would shut the temple doors, so that you would not light useless fires on my altar! I am not pleased with you,&#8221; says the </span><span class="nd"><span class="content">Lord</span></span><span class="content"> Almighty, &#8220;and I will accept no offering from your hands. </span></span><span class="verse v11" data-usfm="MAL.1.11"><span class="label">11</span><span class="content">My name will be great among the nations, from where the sun rises to where it sets. He walked with me in peace and uprightness, and turned many from sin.</span></span></div><div class="p"><span class="verse v6" data-usfm="MAL.2.6"></span><span class="verse v7" data-usfm="MAL.2.7"><span class="label">7</span><span class="content">&#8220;For the lips of a priest ought to preserve knowledge, because he is the messenger of the </span><span class="nd"><span class="content">Lord</span></span><span class="content"> Almighty and people seek instruction from his mouth. </span></span><span class="verse v8" data-usfm="MAL.2.8"><span class="label">8</span><span class="content">But you have turned from the way and by your teaching have caused many to stumble; you have violated the covenant with Levi,&#8221; says the </span><span class="nd"><span class="content">Lord</span></span><span class="content"> Almighty. </span></span><span class="verse v9" data-usfm="MAL.2.9"><span class="label">9</span><span class="content">&#8220;So I have caused you to be despised and humiliated before all the people, because you have not followed my ways but have shown partiality in matters of the law.&#8221;</span></span></div><div class="s1"><span class="heading">Breaking Covenant Through Divorce</span></div><div class="p"><span class="verse v9" data-usfm="MAL.2.9"></span><span class="verse v10" data-usfm="MAL.2.10"><span class="label">10</span><span class="content">Do we not all have one Father</span><span class="note f"><span class="label">#</span><span class="body"><span class="fr">2:10 </span><span class="ft">Or </span><span class="fqa">father</span></span></span><span class="content">? Did not one God create us? Why do we profane the covenant of our ancestors by being unfaithful to one another?</span></span></div><div class="p"><span class="verse v10" data-usfm="MAL.2.10"></span><span class="verse v11" data-usfm="MAL.2.11"><span class="label">11</span><span class="content">Judah has been unfaithful. A detestable thing has been committed in Israel and in Jerusalem: Judah has desecrated the sanctuary the </span><span class="nd"><span class="content">Lord</span></span><span class="content"> loves by marrying women who worship a foreign god. </span></span><span class="verse v12" data-usfm="MAL.2.12"><span class="label">12</span><span class="content">As for the man who does this, whoever he may be, may the </span><span class="nd"><span class="content">Lord</span></span><span class="content"> remove him from the tents of Jacob</span><span class="note f"><span class="label">#</span><span class="body"><span class="fr">2:12 </span><span class="ft">Or </span><span class="fv">12 </span><span class="fqa">May the <span class="nd">Lord</span> remove from the tents of Jacob anyone who gives testimony in behalf of the man who does this</span></span></span><span class="content">&#8212;even though he brings an offering to the </span><span class="nd"><span class="content">Lord</span></span><span class="content"> Almighty.</span></span></div><div class="p"><span class="verse v12" data-usfm="MAL.2.12"></span><span class="verse v13" data-usfm="MAL.2.13"><span class="label">13</span><span class="content">Another thing you do: You flood the </span><span class="nd"><span class="content">Lord</span></span><span class="content">&#8217;s altar with tears. You weep and wail because he no longer looks with favor on your offerings or accepts them with pleasure from your hands. </span></span><span class="verse v14" data-usfm="MAL.2.14"><span class="label">14</span><span class="content">You ask, &#8220;Why?&#8221; It is because the </span><span class="nd"><span class="content">Lord</span></span><span class="content"> is the witness between you and the wife of your youth. You have been unfaithful to her, though she is your partner, the wife of your marriage covenant.</span></span></div><div class="p"><span class="verse v14" data-usfm="MAL.2.14"></span><span class="verse v15" data-usfm="MAL.2.15"><span class="label">15</span><span class="content">Has not the one God made you? You belong to him in body and spirit. And what does the one God seek?
