"For His Splendor"
We worship a God who desires that those living in poverty would become oaks of righteousness—he wants to change lives for his splendor.
I find it really interesting that when Jesus went into the temple and read from Isaiah 61, he had just spent time in the wilderness being tempted. The devil promised him all the authority and splendor in the world if he would only bow down and worship.
But Jesus realized his high calling. He knew that authority and splendor only come from the Father. He also knew the Father's desire for his splendor to be displayed by those on the very margins of society, the unlikeliest of places to find hope and fullness of life. They—the poor, the brokenhearted, the enslaved, the prisoner—will rebuild the ancient ruins. They will become ministers of the Lord!
It’s so easy for us to be caught by the trappings of this world, to be attracted to that which has no eternal value. But Christ calls us to be restorers. To be part of his reconciliation process, bringing about change among those on the margins, not for our glory, but for his.
May we be a people who bring the reconciliation of Christ for the splendor of the King.

When Jesus announced the start of his ministry, he used the words of Isaiah 61. His mission, he declared, was to bring good news to the poor; releasing the captive, binding up the brokenhearted, comforting those who mourn. But what does good news look like?
