Daily Bible Reading, January 2023 - God’s Saving Word: Unity in Christ JesusSample

January 8
Introduction
John the Baptist urges people to turn away from their sins, and he speaks words of judgment to the religious leaders. The adult Jesus approaches John at the Jordan River and is baptized by him.
Scripture Reading
Matthew 3:1-17
Today’s Scripture: Matthew 3:17
Then a voice said from heaven, “This is my own dear Son, with whom I am pleased.”
Reflect
Being baptized with water indicated a desire to stop sinning and wanting to turn away from an old way of life. What was John’s message? How is he described? What does he say about Jesus (verses 11, 12)? In verse 3, Matthew quotes Isaiah 40:3. In what way does John the Baptist fulfill this prophecy?
Pray
Thank you, God, for your messengers, like John the Baptist, who preach repentance and forgiveness of sins. Help me to see the things in my life for which I need to repent and help me to turn away from sinful behavior. Amen.
Tomorrow’s Reading
Matthew 8:1-17:Jesus heals many people.
