The Daniel Fast-Jump Start

DAY 3 OF 6

How’s Your Heart?

That might seem like a health-based question. But in this case, it’s more of a faith-based one. Let me explain. Our hearts hold what we value (Matthew 6:21).

I’m not a Biblical scholar, but sometimes I read different translations to process a verse better. The Common English Bible translation is my go-to option when I want a quick word that’s easy to understand. Then other times, I'll switch to the Amplified version to get more details. That one reads:

“For where your treasure is, there your heart [your wishes, your desires; that on which your life centers] will be also.”

What does this have to do with food again? Well, a lot… Since I started helping folks prepare for the Daniel Fast, the #1 question people ask is: “What can I eat?” People want to know what’s “allowed.”

Depending upon which translation of Daniel 10:2-3 you read, it says he didn’t eat meat or rich foods. It also says he didn’t bathe for three weeks. I don’t know about you, but I definitely shower once a day during the fast.

My point is that you can get so caught up in focusing on the food and following rules to a T that you miss God. He’s more interested in your heart, intention, and follow-through. Regardless, over the next few days, you’re probably going to end up wondering if something is “ok” to eat.

When that happens, just remember Matthew 6:21, and ask yourself:

  • Will eating this store up treasures in heaven through my sacrifice?
  • Does this push me toward strengthening my faith?
  • Do I crave God more than I crave this food?

If your answer is no, it’s likely not something you should have. That’s easier said than done, but by resisting, you are standing in agreement to profess that your relationship with God is far more important than any food.

When we’re obedient and reverent, He honors our needs and even some of our wants. So, spend time thanking God for the opportunity to grow closer to Him.

When tempted by certain foods, pray and journal about your feelings.

Plus, since you’ll need your energy, here’s a recipe to cook during the fast.

One Pan Vegetable Scramble

Course: Lunch/Dinner

Prep 10 minutes

Cook 25 minutes

Total 35 minutes

Serving: 5

Ingredients:

  • 2 zucchini, chopped into half circles
  • 1 yellow squash, chopped into half circles
  • 1 bell pepper, green or color of choice
  • 1-2 sweet potato(es), medium to large, chopped into cubes (or other vegetables like yucca, yams, etc. )
  • 1 head broccoli, cut into bite-sized pieces
  • 2 tablespoons avocado, grapeseed, or olive oil
  • 1/2 tablespoon black pepper
  • 1/2 to 1 tablespoon poultry seasoning (contains no poultry) or other dairy-free no sugar added all-purpose seasoning
  • 1/2 tablespoon garlic powder or garlic salt
  • Sea salt to your liking
  • 1/2 cup vegetable broth or water

Directions

  1. Rinse and chop all vegetables.
  2. Heat 2 tablespoons of oil in a skillet over medium heat and add sweet potato(es). Cover and let cook for 10 minutes, stirring occasionally.
  3. Add squash, zucchini, and half of the seasonings. Cover and let cook for 5-10 minutes, stirring occasionally. (If food sticks to the pan, add broth or water 2 tablespoons at a time, stirring.)
  4. Add bell pepper, broccoli, and the remaining seasonings. Stir so that seasonings are evenly covering the mixture. Add ¼ cup water or veggie broth.
  5. Cover and cook for another 5-10 minutes or until sweet potatoes and vegetables are at the desired level of softness.
