Speak Truth

DAY 6 OF 8

Be “H.O.T.” – Tell the Truth

The assumption that the goal justifies the means underlies the notion that a "white" lie is beneficial. Similar to Abram's lying regarding Sarai, it's assumed that he thought the lie was "good" and that it helped to justify his actions. Although it could seem like a safer technique to trick someone, that leads to poor motivation. By portraying his wife and himself as siblings, Abram merely entangled them in a web of greater falsehood. Pharaoh felt enraged when the trick was told to him and certainly didn't result in what Abram had intended.

Lying is never beneficial or good. God expressly forbids lying and makes no exceptions. Proverbs 6:16–19 (AMP), “There are six things that the Lord hates; Indeed, seven are repulsive to Him: a proud look [the attitude that makes one overestimate oneself and discount others], a lying tongue, And hands that shed innocent blood, a heart that creates wicked plans, feet that run swiftly to evil, a false witness who breaths out lies [even half-truths], and one who spreads discord (rumors) among brothers.” Enough said!

Perhaps you’ve been duped about yourself, about God, or about the Bible. Running away from lies or ignoring them when they aren’t present is arrogant. Seek the Lord for truth, clarity, and confirmation. Perhaps you're untrustworthy because of your history with lying. You can find solace in forgiveness. Maybe you lie all the time to make yourself look good in front of others or to keep people from knowing the real you. And perhaps you've lost all sense of the consequences of lying and are unsure is true and what is not.

There's a better way to live your life no matter where you fall on the lying scale. Being “H.O.T.” with God and others, that is, being honest, open, and transparent, brings truth into the picture. Telling the truth is not easy, and at times downright unpleasant and uncomfortable. But we are called to be truth-tellers. Being truthful is precious to God. Proverbs 12:22 (NLT) says, “The wise don’t make a show of their knowledge, but fools broadcast their foolishness.” Telling the truth demonstrates the fear of the Lord and exhibits our trust in His sovereign plan. Furthermore, speaking the truth is not a gentle suggestion, it is a command.

Do you struggle to be "H.O.T."?
