The Heart of Who I Am

DAY 3 OF 5

I AM CARING

For some people, "caring" is natural. It's as easy for them as driving a car. Some people, though, are still in the "driver's ed" phase of caring. And, you know what? That's okay. In fact, if caring came naturally for everyone, then God wouldn't have to remind us to care, right? But He does. In Galatians 6 the Word says to "let us do good to everyone" and in Philippians 2 it says to "let each of you not only look to his own interests but also to the interests of others."

So let's explore how to care:

  • Listen
The book of James reminds us to be quick to listen and slow to speak. Let's face it - we like to hear what we have to say! Sometimes, we even rehearse it in our minds before speaking it aloud, only to realize we've been so caught up in our mental voice that we've stopped listening to others. Listening means staying focused on the words and actions of those around you. Pay attention to what others say and the way they say it.
  • Follow up
This step comes immediately after listening, as well as at a later time. For example, if you meet Seth at a party and discover he’s new to the area, follow up a few days later by asking if he enjoyed the party and if he’s getting settled in. If Britney tells you she’s struggling with a friend moving away, text her a few days later to see if she is better.

Caring can also be an action. If someone is going through a crisis, following up can be verbal or in a text, but it can also mean physically showing you care, like watering plants if they are out of town or delivering soup if they are sick. Pray that you'll know the best way to care.

NEXT STEP: Who is a person in your life who listens? Write ideas you have for how you can be a better listener like that individual.
