I Have Called You by Name (S1-E1)Sample
Do you dare to doubt?
Try to get the picture of Nicodemus in focus for a moment: smart man, high office, lots of influence. When people have questions, they come to him. He has the answers and speaks with authority. A man of stature. A teacher. And he radiates that. Member of a high religious order.
And then he encounters Jesus...
Intrigued, he follows Jesus and sees things he doesn't understand. Can't explain. The authority and power of Jesus. Those are of a different order.
In The Chosen, you see that played out beautifully. Certainty becomes doubt with Nicodemus. The "knowing" becomes questioning. The teacher becomes a student.
And you see this not only in The Chosen. In John 3, you get the same picture. Isn't it beautiful that a man with so many answers with Jesus becomes a disciple? Someone who starts asking questions and may receive answers?
In The Chosen, you see Nicodemus struggling between being the "teacher" for his followers, the religious order, and seeking Jesus to understand more.
Do you dare to doubt?
And do you dare go to Jesus with your doubts?
I think that's a big lesson you can take away with you today. Doubting is ‘okay.’ If we are honest, we all do it from time to time. But where do you go with your doubts?
The beauty of Jesus is that He does not send Nicodemus away or keep him at a distance. No, He actually invites him in. Come and see, come closer.
Do you dare go to Jesus?
Take the following questions to consider:
- Do you sometimes have doubts?
- What do you do with your doubts?
- What place does Jesus have in your doubts?
Prayer:
"Lord, it sometimes feels so easy to have 'the' answer, but I realize that "Your thoughts are much higher than mine," and that my thinking and understanding is so much smaller than Yours. I want to come to You and learn from You. Help me to see You. Amen."
