5 Reasons to Memorize Scripture (And How to Start)

DAY 4 OF 5

Scripture Memorization Helps You Endure Suffering

We all experience trials and suffering in this life. Some of our deepest hurts and questions arise from seasons of sorrow and loss. We want to remain faithful to Christ in our trials, but how can we hold fast to Him when everything seems to fall apart? Where do we find hope when our circumstances feel hopeless?

Scripture holds the promises we need to have hope in our suffering. Filling our minds with God’s Word during the dark nights of the soul will help us to remain steadfast in the storm. The apostle Paul encourages us not to lose heart because even “though our outer self is wasting away, our inner self is being renewed day by day. For this light and momentary affliction is preparing for us an eternal weight of glory beyond all comparison as we look not to things that are seen but to things that are unseen” (2 Cor. 4:16-18). God works in our suffering, even if we don’t see it. But we can see our suffering in its momentary nature when our eyes are fixed on the promise of Christ’s return and our home with God forever in heaven. God gave us His Word to help us hold fast.

Maybe you’re in the grip of suffering right now. Perhaps you’re dealing with a difficult diagnosis or a crumbling marriage. Maybe you’re experiencing financial distress or an unfulfilled desire like marriage or a child. How can memorizing Scripture help you endure through this difficult time? Simply meditating on God’s Word can help you put one foot in front of the other and make it through today with your eyes fixed on Jesus. Every sentence of Scripture can preach a sermon of comfort to your heart when you rehearse and recite it over and over. Don’t underestimate the comforting power of God’s Word as you dwell on His promises. His grace is sufficient for you, and His power is made perfect in your weaknesses (see 2 Cor. 12:9).

Memorization Tip:

When you don’t know what to pray during a difficult season in life, try praying the Scripture you’re memorizing. God doesn’t need to be reminded of His Word, but we do! When you pray and think about the words, you’ll believe them more deeply. God’s Word is a lifeline that can help you endure.

About this Plan

5 Reasons to Memorize Scripture (And How to Start)

Memorizing God’s Word cultivates faithfulness and growth in our lives. We don’t memorize Scripture just so we can recite it. Rather, we hide God’s Word in our hearts so that our lives are transformed. Memorizing Scripture deepens our love for God, helps us fight sin, renews our minds, helps us endure suffering, and seasons our speech with grace and truth. Give God your mind and watch Him change your life!
