As we begin a new book, it’s helpful to lay the context: Ruth was a Gentile (Moabite), a woman, and a widow… all in all, an odd main character at this time in history! Israel was also going through a famine, and Naomi’s family left Bethlehem (meaning “house of bread”) because of it.
This short book focuses on love - God’s love that extends to all nations and love between people - as well as redemption. The theme of redemption is important here as, after years of tragedy, Naomi returns to Bethlehem, where this book mostly takes place. Remember who came out of Bethlehem, the one called “the bread of life,” years later…

About this Plan
The story of Ruth stands as a story of redemption. Coming from tragedy and as a foreign woman, Ruth is the last person we might expect to see the goodness of God. She becomes a key figure in the story of the Bible and the great-grandmother of King David himself!
