When I Fight, I'll Fight on My Knees

Be anxious for nothing, but in everything by prayer and supplication, with thanksgiving, let your requests be made known to God; and the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and minds through Christ Jesus (Philippians 4:6-7).

Life can be a whirlwind of challenges and pressures, and those worries about the future can really weigh us down. It's like being tangled in a dark, deep well with ropes of worry suffocating us. The more we dwell on it, the tighter the knots get, dragging us deeper into darkness.

How should we fight our battle of anxiety?

With our knees.

Paul gives his advice on worries while he was in prison, in his letter to the Philippians as in the above verse.

We can read the above verse in The Message version:

Don’t fret or worry. Instead of worrying, pray. Let petitions and praises shape your worries into prayers, letting God know your concerns. Before you know it, a sense of God’s wholeness, everything coming together for good, will come and settle you down. It’s wonderful what happens when Christ displaces worry at the center of your life.

And also in The Passion Translation:

Don’t be pulled in different directions or worried about a thing. Be saturated in prayer throughout each day, offering your faith-filled requests before God with overflowing gratitude. Tell him every detail of your life, then God’s wonderful peace that transcends human understanding, will guard your heart and mind through Jesus Christ.

Worrying is like talking to ourselves about things we can't change, or if something changes, it worsens our health. On the contrary, prayer is our conversation with God about things He can change. Unfortunately, when we worry, our instinct is to keep thinking and rely on our own efforts. Yet, God's way is about trusting in Him, not in our own strength.

In Hebrews, it says, "Let us, therefore, make every effort to enter that rest." (Hebrews 4:11). What is this "rest"? Entering into a place of rest means shedding our human strength and relying on God's strength, fully surrendering, and trusting Him alone. That's what God wants us to "make every effort" for—to stop relying on our own strength and surrender to Him. Rest is not an inactivity but a Spirit-led activity.

And in that place of rest, tell all your worries in detail, just like a child to their parents. As parents, when our child comes to us in tears, we will try to find a way out, won't we? Likewise, with God. He who did not spare His own Son, but delivered Him up for us all, how shall He not with Him also freely give us all things? (Romans 8:32).

We may not immediately get the solution to our problems after we finish praying. However, as we rest in prayer, it's like we're falling into the strong and everlasting arms of God, and we know we are safe there. Whatever happens tomorrow, it's all good, because Jesus is with us. Jesus is enough. God weaves everything together for our good, and His faithfulness stands the test of time. His hands never stop embracing us.

So, this is how we fight, my friend, as sung in the song ‘Battle Belongs’ by Phil Wickham:

“So when I fight, I'll fight on my knees
With my hands lifted high
Oh God, the battle belongs to You
And every fear I lay at Your feet
I'll sing through the night
Oh God, the battle belongs to You”

Come as You Are

Sometimes we feel like we're in this dry and distant place from God when we pray. Searching for God, but He seems far away. Or we picture ourselves coming before this totally All-Powerful figure with the mixed feelings of awe and undeserved. But do you know that God longs to spend time with you, like with a buddy, or Father with son or daughter, just because He loves you.
