Worthy: Embracing Your Identity in Christ

DAY 5 OF 5

Have you ever replayed a past wrongdoing in your mind? Do your thoughts accuse you or others? Even after we know our true identity in Christ, we may struggle to live according to it. Though we no longer desire to sin, our bodies may fall back into destructive patterns. Addiction to drugs, pornography, or unhealthy eating can remain a heavy burden after salvation.

While the reality of an immediate change in our identity is true at our core, at the same time, living out our identity is a lifelong process. This process is called sanctification. Sanctification is the day-by-day transformation into the image of Christ. It is the journey of growing in holiness by the Spirit. Some theologians also describe sanctification as the means by which we increasingly embody who God made us to be in Christ. This process is a slow one as we continue to wrestle with sin as believers.

Though our flesh is weak and tempted to return to old habits, the indwelling Holy Spirit can help us to withstand. First Corinthians 10:13 says, “No temptation has come upon you except what is common to humanity. But God is faithful; he will not allow you to be tempted beyond what you are able, but with the temptation, he will also provide the way out so that you may be able to bear it.” If you struggle with temptation from old habits, please know that God is with you. You are not alone in your fight. He has put a community of believers around you for support. He has also equipped medical professionals and therapists to walk with you. By His Spirit, God will strengthen us to live according to who He says we are.

The reality of our instant transformation into saints should not pressure us to be perfect. Rather, this truth urges us to lean on the indwelling Holy Spirit who first made us alive. We must trust Him to continue His good work and apply Jesus’s salvation to the stubborn flesh that remains. Regardless of whatever lies in your path, God will pursue your progress until completion.

About this Plan

Worthy: Embracing Your Identity in Christ

Our identity informs what we say, think, and do. Identity can be rooted in many things, but it is important for our identity to be rooted in the right thing—Jesus.
