Strengthening Children’s IdentitySample

Strengthening Children’s Identity

DAY 1 OF 4

As our children step back into the school building (or school at home), our minds ponder on how to grow our child's identity in Christ. The world is throwing so many identity curveballs that we need to be intentional as parents to continually anchor their identity in Christ.

Gideon was approached by an angel and the angel gave him a message from God, “Gideon you are a warrior.” “What?,” thought Gideon. God was speaking identity over Gideon. He heard the truth and then by faith became the warrior God spoke over him.

Living Words Spoken + Faith = New Identity

God said, “Let there be…..” God spoke the world into existence. God spoke and creation was formed. There is power in your words. There is power in our children's words.

My son was struggling with reading a couple of years ago. He would not read in front of people. My husband and I highly suspected he would test positive with dyslexia. The dyslexia test date was a couple of months away all the while his confidence was quickly sinking. Feeling completely helpless on how to help him, God softly spoke to me and told me to add a declaration to a list we were already speaking over him at night. God prompted me to add, “You are a strong reader. That is who God created you to be.” I thought, “Ok, Lord. I can handle that!” So, every night, we intentionally added “You are a very strong reader.” Two weeks into adding this new declaration his teacher messaged me with excitement to inform me that my son had raised his hand for the first time in 3 months of school to voluntarily read in front of the entire class! In Mom style, I cried, overjoyed with gratitude to God. God immediately showed me the power in our words. My son was rising up to the very word being spoken over him each night, just like Gideon.

Take the time to sit and ask God what words need to be spoken over your children to grow their identity in Him. Then, make a list of truths your child can declare each morning over themselves while looking in the mirror then make a list of truths you can declare over them each day. You will witness the words spoken over them will harvest a stronger identity in Christ.

Currently, we have our children speak 3 declarations over themselves in the mirror each morning and my husband and I speak a list of declarations over them each night. We have a few declarations we use across the board and then add in a few personalized truths for specific identity growth.

Bring this concept to life for your children by engaging as a family in the following activity:
