Why did Jesus have to die?

Many people speak of Jesus’ death the way they would speak of any young life cut short. They frame the crucifixion as a tragic end to a promising career. But John’s Gospel won’t allow us to think like that.

Let’s return to our framework — 321. Consider who Jesus is…

…according to God’s THREE-ness, He is the eternal Son of God, filled with the Holy Spirit. He is our Maker come in the flesh. He is not a mere man cut off in his prime — he is Lord!

…according to the World’s TWO-ness, He is the Second Adam who has volunteered to enter our predicament. He has come to represent the world and to take responsibility for us.

…according to Our ONE-ness: He is drawing very near — meeting us right where we are, in all our darkness and death.

In that frame, the cross looks very different. And it makes sense why Jesus’ last words are so triumphant: “It is finished!” (John 19:30). He doesn’t say, “I am finished,” but instead he declares that his work is finished. What does that mean?

Consider 321…

Think of THREE: The cross is where Jesus, the Son of God, has been “lifted up” before the world and shown to be Lord through his self-giving love.

Think of TWO: The cross is where Jesus, the Second Adam, takes responsibility. He shoulders the burdens of the whole world.

Think of ONE: The cross is where Jesus, our Saviour, has died our death in order to give us his life.

As you read John chapter 19, notice how the trial and the crucifixion are portrayed. Jesus is on trial, but somehow, it’s his judges that appear trapped. Jesus is condemned, but it’s everyone else that appears guilty. Jesus is crucified, but the sign over his head reads “King”! If we have eyes to see it, the cross is not a tragedy — it’s the ultimate triumph!
