Adore - the Teen Girl's Guide to AdventSample
The Angel Candle
The last candle of Advent is called the “Angel Candle.” This candle represents all the angels who came to earth to proclaim that the Prince of Peace was coming into the world.
There are four notable angelic visits – one for each previous candle.
The first angelic visit happened to a priest named Zechariah. Zechariah was doing his usual priestly duties in the temple when suddenly he was visited by an angel named Gabriel. Gabriel proclaimed that Zechariah was going to be a father to the famous prophet John the Baptist. Because Zechariah and his wife were very old, they were unable to have children. Unfortunately, Zechariah didn’t believe the words of the angel. He became mute until John was indeed born.
The second angelic visit features Gabriel again. This time, he appeared to Mary herself. He proclaimed that Mary was going to give birth to the Peace-bringer, or Jesus. Despite any fear of what would happen, Mary believed the angel's words.
The third angelic visit is from an unnamed angel. This angel visited Joseph, Mary’s fiancé, in a dream. He explained that Mary was completely innocent. He told Joseph that Mary was pregnant with the Prince of Peace, or the Messiah, through the power of God.
The final angelic visit was the one we discussed during the last lesson. A whole legion of angels came to lowly shepherds to exclaim “Peace on earth and goodwill towards men!”
We light the Angel Candle to remember the message of all the angels - that Jesus, the Prince of Peace, was about to be born.
