I Hate Christmas

DAY 5 OF 5

Love

Every year, Christmas is advertised as "the most wonderful time of the year." There are parties, songs, and events all designed to evoke the holiday spirit. However, for many of us, it is not necessarily the happiest season of all.

Embracing this version of Christmas can serve as a stark reminder of lost relationships, unmet expectations, and a sense of unworthiness. Misunderstanding the true meaning of Christmas can even lead some to say, "I hate Christmas."

But there's good news. Christmas is not about having everything perfectly in place at the end of the year in order to find happiness. Christmas is about God's love for us, and His love provides a foundation that can carry us through anything.

The greatest joy of Christmas lies in recognizing that God sent His Son into this world out of His immense love for us. As John 1:14 beautifully states, "The Word became flesh and made his dwelling among us. We have seen his glory, the glory of the one and only Son, who came from the Father, full of grace and truth."

When sin entered the world, it brought with it brokenness and pain. Life became complicated and challenging. Yet, God did not abandon us. Instead of leaving us to suffer the consequences of sin, He devised a way to set us free and restore us to the way things are meant to be.

We deserved death, but God granted us life out of love that we can hardly fathom. And this act of love was carried out through His Son, Jesus. Through Jesus' death and resurrection, our relationship with God was reconciled, and we were given the promise of eternal life.

God freely offers His love to us, and when we receive it, the true joy of Christmas becomes evident. We may not always feel the happiness that the season promises. We still encounter sadness and pain, but His love carries us through it all. His love becomes our identity and empowers us to confidently live out His purpose for our lives.

This enduring love is far more valuable than any fleeting feeling during the holiday season. So, whatever this Christmas season brings, let us collectively remember that "In Him was life, and that life was the light of all mankind. The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it."

Reflection/Prayer

How have the expectations of a perfect Christmas let you down? Spend some time in prayer asking God to fill you with his love and reminders of what Christmas means for your life.

About this Plan

I Hate Christmas

By mid-December, many already hate Christmas. We are tired of the carols and the parties, and our tree is starting to die. There are a lot of reasons that people hate Christmas. But, what if all of the hatred is because what we hoped for isn’t reality? This year, set aside the hate and come expecting something new as we dive into Advent themes of the season.
