A HARD Leader: Part IV

This week we’re talking about Moses’ leadership qualities using the acronym HARD. We’ve discussed being Humble, Approachable, and a Representative of God, and now let’s discuss being a Delegator.

In Exodus 18, Moses’ father-in-law, Jethro, was shocked at how Moses spent all day and night serving as the only judge to the disputes of hundreds of thousands of Israelites.

Jethro wisely encouraged Moses to delegate authority to other God-fearing leaders by establishing a military-type hierarchy. Jethro said, “Have them bring every difficult case to you;

the simple cases they can decide themselves. That will make your load lighter because they will share it with you.”

We cannot serve others well if we don’t delegate our heavy load. Become a Delegator and spread out your work. It’ll lighten your load and increase productivity.

Questions for Reflection

• Take a moment to assess your situation at work. What is most essential to your job? What could be delegated? Who might be able to take that on for you? If you cannot think of anyone, does that mean you should consider additional training for your team or hiring someone new?
• For another example of leadership, read the story of Joseph in Genesis 37, who, although he was sold into slavery to the Egyptians, managed to rise to the title of grand Viser and save not just Egypt but the surrounding nations as well.
