Daily Bible Reading — December 2023, God’s Saving Word: JoySample
December 1
Introduction
Mark 1:1–8: Today’s reading begins with the preaching of John the Baptist, often described as the forerunner to Jesus. The opening verse sounds as if it could be a news headline, inviting us to learn more about the “Good News” of Jesus Christ, the Son of God.
Today’s Key Verse: Mark 1:1
This is the Good News about Jesus Christ, the Son of God.
Reflect
What was John the Baptist’s message (verse 4)? How is he described (verse 6)? Verses 2 and 3 are a quote from the prophet Isaiah (40:3). In what way does this quote relate to John?
Pray
Lord God, as John the Baptist prepared the way for the coming of Jesus with his message of baptism and repentance, empower me with your Holy Spirit to be a messenger of your Good News of forgiveness and salvation through your Son, Jesus. In your holy name, I pray. Amen.
Tomorrow’s Reading
Mark 1:9–20: Jesus is baptized by John.
