Character Calling: TreasuredSample
A FOUNDATION OF HONOR. The first miracle Jesus performed, turning water into wine, happened because his mom asked him to help out in a tricky situation. Jesus revealed his glory and, in the process, honored his mother.
Honoring someone means giving them value and respect in our speech and actions toward them. And the place we learn the pattern of honoring others is in our earliest relationships - our parents or caregivers. They are also our first opportunity to receive, submit to, and obey God-given authority. It builds a foundation in our hearts for honoring God.
Scripture tells us that we are to honor our father and mother because then we will live long and full lives. This not only means honoring our natural parents, but it also means honoring those who are in places of authority in our lives (like our teachers, pastors, and bosses) and those who love and care for us. If we don’t learn to love and honor them, that disrespect will bleed over into all our other relationships including our relationship with God.
On day one, we discussed loving others and what we might need to start doing in our relationships to display the love of Jesus. Honoring our parents and those in places of authority in our lives is what God commanded and what Jesus modeled. How can you follow his example today?
Consider: How do your relationships compare with what God says? What needs to change so you can reflect God’s love and honor them?
