Spiritual Leadership for Parents Of: Kids

DAY 2 OF 5

Consistency

If you have kids, chances are you have been the victim of an obnoxious children’s song that gets stuck on repeat in your head, burrowing its way to the center of your brain like a rainforest parasite. Whether it’s Baby Shark or Barney, these songs can rear their ugly heads anywhere from the bathroom to the boardroom, taking control of your consciousness at a moment’s notice and rendering you powerless against their catchy melodies.

Why? Well, it’s likely that those songs have played around you so consistently that you have absorbed them into the deepest recesses of your mind until they have become part of your internal soundtrack.

It’s a real-world example of the power of consistency. Our mind always returns to what we play on repeat in our life.

Both the Scriptures we read from Romans and Ephesians deal with the difference between the old version of us and the new one. Our old habits and our new ones. Our old priorities and our new ones. And one key word is found in both passages: renew. One of the definitions we find for this word is noteworthy: to REPEAT so as to reaffirm. When we consistently repeat godly truth, habits, and priorities, they stay as close to us as that kids' song we can’t stop singing.

So here is the challenge for each of us: be consistent with the things that matter. Find those few minutes each morning to read from the Bible and spend time in prayer. Make getting to a church service the highest priority for your family each weekend. Speak one life-giving statement to your spouse and kids each day. Put these things on repeat and watch how God transforms your life.
