A Few Words Before I Go

DAY 9 OF 13

Jesus told His disciples to spread the good news

“Go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all things that I commanded you. Behold, I am with you always, even to the end of the age.” (Matthew 28:19-20)

Jesus Christ had spent about three years together with His disciples. But after His crucifixion and resurrection, He told them: “I am ascending to my Father and your Father, to My God and your God” (John 20:17). So, the disciples had to say goodbye.

One day they would meet their Lord again, according to His promise: “I will come again and will take you to Myself, that where I am you may be also” (John 14:3). But until then, the disciples had important work to do. They were to spread the good news they had learned from Jesus. They were to tell the world about Him, as eye witnesses of His preaching and miracles, but also of His suffering, death and resurrection. Through their missionary work, people from all nations would come to faith in Jesus Christ.

Jesus’ salvation work was completely unique and no human can add anything to it. But the disciples did have a key role in God’s overall mission to save the world, as they pointed people to Jesus and taught them about God’s will for their lives. Everybody should know that Jesus Christ is the Savior who holds all authority in heaven and on earth.

Do you think this commission was only for the disciples back then, or does it also apply to present day believers and to you personally?

About this Plan

A Few Words Before I Go

It’s often hard to say goodbye to people. Especially if they are leaving for a long time or even dying. In such situations, we attach great importance to the last words someone tells us. In the Bible we also read several examples of people who had something important to say before they died or left. Let’s read their last words together.
