Have you ever wished an emotion would go away? Our feelings don’t always feel good; when they don’t, we’ll do anything to feel something different. When we feel sad, mad, or anything that isn’t happiness, we distract ourselves instead of asking what’s happening in our hearts to make us feel the way we do. The book of Ecclesiastes was written by a wise person reflecting on life. In it, the author writes that there is a time for feeling all sorts of different things: happiness, sadness, anger, and more. Those emotions matter; if we notice them, sit with them and consider what they might be telling us instead of trying to get rid of them, we can begin to find healing. Not without the emotions but because of them.
Today, write down the emotions that you’re feeling at any moment. Don’t assign them worth. Instead, simply recognize them for what they are.
