Surrender
Bethany
Devo: I once saved a drowning baby. Though I’m still waiting for the plaque in the mail for my heroic effort.
It all began as a relaxing trip down the lazy river with my family. It was not your typical “lazy” river as each side was circulating the water in such a way to create a fairly strong current along the edges. As best I can tell, this mother missed the sign explaining the water current and proceeded in with her small baby girl in tow. Immediately after entering the water, the river began pulling this woman and her baby along for the ride. I rounded the corner, shortly after, to find a screaming mother, clinging to the cement riverbank, fighting the current while accidentally holding her baby underwater.
The next moments happened quickly, as I took the baby from her mother’s grip and out from under the water. Some coughing, a little throw up, and she would be fine. The mom, however, continued to cling to the cement, screaming for help as I stood inches from her. You see, what she hadn’t realized was that the current that threatened to pull her under, was strongest at the edge where she was clung. Iff she could let go and allow me to pull her to the center of the river, she could stand with little resistance. It should have been over quickly, mom shouldn’t have torn up her arm as badly as she did on that cement, but it took myself, a lifeguard, and a slew of other voices begging her to “just let go!”
I am this woman. Not the actual woman in the story, but the woman who clings so tightly to what I think will help me, ignoring God’s voice telling me to “just let go!” I like to feel like I have some semblance of control and the idea of surrendering my grip and letting God hold me, scares me.
I am so grateful that we serve a God who never lets go and will always call us to surrender, no matter how many times we try and cling to the edge.
Thankful: How have you experienced God “holding you” as you surrendered to Him? Thank Him for it!
