 <div class="label">4</div><div class="s1">Solomon&#8217;s Officials and Governors</div><div class="p"> 1So King Solomon ruled over all Israel. 2And these were his chief officials:</div><div class="b"></div><div class="li1">Azariah son of Zadok&#8212;the priest;</div><div class="li1"> 3Elihoreph and Ahijah, sons of Shisha&#8212;secretaries;</div><div class="li1">Jehoshaphat son of Ahilud&#8212;recorder;</div><div class="li1"> 4Benaiah son of Jehoiada&#8212;commander in chief;</div><div class="li1">Zadok and Abiathar&#8212;priests;</div><div class="li1"> 5Azariah son of Nathan&#8212;in charge of the district governors;</div><div class="li1">Zabud son of Nathan&#8212;a priest and adviser to the king;</div><div class="li1"> 6Ahishar&#8212;palace administrator;</div><div class="li1">Adoniram son of Abda&#8212;in charge of forced labor.</div><div class="b"></div><div class="p"> 7Solomon had twelve district governors over all Israel, who supplied provisions for the king and the royal household. Each one had to provide supplies for one month in the year. 8These are their names:</div><div class="b"></div><div class="li1">Ben-Hur&#8212;in the hill country of Ephraim;</div><div class="li1"> 9Ben-Deker&#8212;in Makaz, Shaalbim, Beth Shemesh and Elon Bethhanan;</div><div class="li1"> 10Ben-Hesed&#8212;in Arubboth (Sokoh and all the land of Hepher were his);</div><div class="li1"> 11Ben-Abinadab&#8212;in Naphoth Dor (he was married to Taphath daughter of Solomon);</div><div class="li1"> 12Baana son of Ahilud&#8212;in Taanach and Megiddo, and in all of Beth Shan next to Zarethan below Jezreel, from Beth Shan to Abel Meholah across to Jokmeam;</div><div class="li1"> 13Ben-Geber&#8212;in Ramoth Gilead (the settlements of Jair son of Manasseh in Gilead were his, as well as the region of Argob in Bashan and its sixty large walled cities with bronze gate bars);</div><div class="li1"> 14Ahinadab son of Iddo&#8212;in Mahanaim;</div><div class="li1"> 15Ahimaaz&#8212;in Naphtali (he had married Basemath daughter of Solomon);</div><div class="li1"> 16Baana son of Hushai&#8212;in Asher and in Aloth;</div><div class="li1"> 17Jehoshaphat son of Paruah&#8212;in Issachar;</div><div class="li1"> 18Shimei son of Ela&#8212;in Benjamin;</div><div class="li1"> 19Geber son of Uri&#8212;in Gilead (the country of Sihon king of the Amorites and the country of Og king of Bashan). He was the only governor over the district.</div><div class="s1">Solomon&#8217;s Daily Provisions</div><div class="p"> 20The people of Judah and Israel were as numerous as the sand on the seashore; they ate, they drank and they were happy. 21And Solomon ruled over all the kingdoms from the Euphrates River to the land of the Philistines, as far as the border of Egypt. These countries brought tribute and were Solomon&#8217;s subjects all his life.</div><div class="p"> 22Solomon&#8217;s daily provisions were thirty cors#4:22 That is, probably about 5 1/2 tons or about 5 metric tons of the finest flour and sixty cors#4:22 That is, probably about 11 tons or about 10 metric tons of meal, 23ten head of stall-fed cattle, twenty of pasture-fed cattle and a hundred sheep and goats, as well as deer, gazelles, roebucks and choice fowl. 24For he ruled over all the kingdoms west of the Euphrates River, from Tiphsah to Gaza, and had peace on all sides. 25During Solomon&#8217;s lifetime Judah and Israel, from Dan to Beersheba, lived in safety, everyone under their own vine and under their own fig tree.</div><div class="p"> 26Solomon had four#4:26 Some Septuagint manuscripts (see also 2 Chron. 9:25); Hebrew forty thousand stalls for chariot horses, and twelve thousand horses.#4:26 Or charioteers</div><div class="p"> 27The district governors, each in his month, supplied provisions for King Solomon and all who came to the king&#8217;s table. They saw to it that nothing was lacking. 28They also brought to the proper place their quotas of barley and straw for the chariot horses and the other horses.</div><div class="s1">Solomon&#8217;s Wisdom</div><div class="p"> 29God gave Solomon wisdom and very great insight, and a breadth of understanding as measureless as the sand on the seashore. 30Solomon&#8217;s wisdom was greater than the wisdom of all the people of the East, and greater than all the wisdom of Egypt. 31He was wiser than anyone else, including Ethan the Ezrahite&#8212;wiser than Heman, Kalkol and Darda, the sons of Mahol. And his fame spread to all the surrounding nations. 32He spoke three thousand proverbs and his songs numbered a thousand and five. 33He spoke about plant life, from the cedar of Lebanon to the hyssop that grows out of walls. He also spoke about animals and birds, reptiles and fish. 34From all nations people came to listen to Solomon&#8217;s wisdom, sent by all the kings of the world, who had heard of his wisdom.#4:34 In Hebrew texts 4:21-34 is numbered 5:1-14.</div>

 <div class="label">6</div><div class="p"> 1Therefore let us move beyond the elementary teachings about Christ and be taken forward to maturity, not laying again the foundation of repentance from acts that lead to death,#6:1 Or from useless rituals and of faith in God, 2instruction about cleansing rites,#6:2 Or about baptisms the laying on of hands, the resurrection of the dead, and eternal judgment. 3And God permitting, we will do so.</div><div class="p"> 4It is impossible for those who have once been enlightened, who have tasted the heavenly gift, who have shared in the Holy Spirit, 5who have tasted the goodness of the word of God and the powers of the coming age 6and who have fallen#6:6 Or age, 6 if they fall away, to be brought back to repentance. To their loss they are crucifying the Son of God all over again and subjecting him to public disgrace. 7Land that drinks in the rain often falling on it and that produces a crop useful to those for whom it is farmed receives the blessing of God. 8But land that produces thorns and thistles is worthless and is in danger of being cursed. In the end it will be burned.</div><div class="p"> 9Even though we speak like this, dear friends, we are convinced of better things in your case&#8212;the things that have to do with salvation. 10God is not unjust; he will not forget your work and the love you have shown him as you have helped his people and continue to help them. 11We want each of you to show this same diligence to the very end, so that what you hope for may be fully realized. 12We do not want you to become lazy, but to imitate those who through faith and patience inherit what has been promised.</div><div class="s1">The Certainty of God&#8217;s Promise</div><div class="p"> 13When God made his promise to Abraham, since there was no one greater for him to swear by, he swore by himself, 14saying, &#8220;I will surely bless you and give you many descendants.&#8221;#6:14 Gen. 22:17 15And so after waiting patiently, Abraham received what was promised.</div><div class="p"> 16People swear by someone greater than themselves, and the oath confirms what is said and puts an end to all argument. 17Because God wanted to make the unchanging nature of his purpose very clear to the heirs of what was promised, he confirmed it with an oath. 18God did this so that, by two unchangeable things in which it is impossible for God to lie, we who have fled to take hold of the hope set before us may be greatly encouraged. 19We have this hope as an anchor for the soul, firm and secure. It enters the inner sanctuary behind the curtain, 20where our forerunner, Jesus, has entered on our behalf. He has become a high priest forever, in the order of Melchizedek.</div>

 <div class="label">5</div><div class="s1">Jesus Calls His First Disciples</div><div class="p"> 1One day as Jesus was standing by the Lake of Gennesaret,#5:1 That is, the Sea of Galilee the people were crowding around him and listening to the word of God. 2He saw at the water&#8217;s edge two boats, left there by the fishermen, who were washing their nets. 3He got into one of the boats, the one belonging to Simon, and asked him to put out a little from shore. Then he sat down and taught the people from the boat.</div><div class="p"> 4When he had finished speaking, he said to Simon, &#8220;Put out into deep water, and let down the nets for a catch.&#8221;</div><div class="p"> 5Simon answered, &#8220;Master, we&#8217;ve worked hard all night and haven&#8217;t caught anything. But because you say so, I will let down the nets.&#8221;</div><div class="p"> 6When they had done so, they caught such a large number of fish that their nets began to break. 7So they signaled their partners in the other boat to come and help them, and they came and filled both boats so full that they began to sink.</div><div class="p"> 8When Simon Peter saw this, he fell at Jesus&#8217; knees and said, &#8220;Go away from me, Lord; I am a sinful man!&#8221; 9For he and all his companions were astonished at the catch of fish they had taken, 10and so were James and John, the sons of Zebedee, Simon&#8217;s partners.</div><div class="p">Then Jesus said to Simon, &#8220;Don&#8217;t be afraid; from now on you will fish for people.&#8221; 11So they pulled their boats up on shore, left everything and followed him.</div><div class="s1">Jesus Heals a Man With Leprosy</div><div class="p"> 12While Jesus was in one of the towns, a man came along who was covered with leprosy.#5:12 The Greek word traditionally translated leprosy was used for various diseases affecting the skin. When he saw Jesus, he fell with his face to the ground and begged him, &#8220;Lord, if you are willing, you can make me clean.&#8221;</div><div class="p"> 13Jesus reached out his hand and touched the man. &#8220;I am willing,&#8221; he said. &#8220;Be clean!&#8221; And immediately the leprosy left him.</div><div class="p"> 14Then Jesus ordered him, &#8220;Don&#8217;t tell anyone, but go, show yourself to the priest and offer the sacrifices that Moses commanded for your cleansing, as a testimony to them.&#8221;</div><div class="p"> 15Yet the news about him spread all the more, so that crowds of people came to hear him and to be healed of their sicknesses. 16But Jesus often withdrew to lonely places and prayed.</div><div class="s1">Jesus Forgives and Heals a Paralyzed Man</div><div class="p"> 17One day Jesus was teaching, and Pharisees and teachers of the law were sitting there. They had come from every village of Galilee and from Judea and Jerusalem. And the power of the Lord was with Jesus to heal the sick. 18Some men came carrying a paralyzed man on a mat and tried to take him into the house to lay him before Jesus. 19When they could not find a way to do this because of the crowd, they went up on the roof and lowered him on his mat through the tiles into the middle of the crowd, right in front of Jesus.</div><div class="p"> 20When Jesus saw their faith, he said, &#8220;Friend, your sins are forgiven.&#8221;</div><div class="p"> 21The Pharisees and the teachers of the law began thinking to themselves, &#8220;Who is this fellow who speaks blasphemy? Who can forgive sins but God alone?&#8221;</div><div class="p"> 22Jesus knew what they were thinking and asked, &#8220;Why are you thinking these things in your hearts? 23Which is easier: to say, &#8216;Your sins are forgiven,&#8217; or to say, &#8216;Get up and walk&#8217;? 24But I want you to know that the Son of Man has authority on earth to forgive sins.&#8221; So he said to the paralyzed man, &#8220;I tell you, get up, take your mat and go home.&#8221; 25Immediately he stood up in front of them, took what he had been lying on and went home praising God. 26Everyone was amazed and gave praise to God. They were filled with awe and said, &#8220;We have seen remarkable things today.&#8221;</div><div class="s1">Jesus Calls Levi and Eats With Sinners</div><div class="p"> 27After this, Jesus went out and saw a tax collector by the name of Levi sitting at his tax booth. &#8220;Follow me,&#8221; Jesus said to him, 28and Levi got up, left everything and followed him.</div><div class="p"> 29Then Levi held a great banquet for Jesus at his house, and a large crowd of tax collectors and others were eating with them. 30But the Pharisees and the teachers of the law who belonged to their sect complained to his disciples, &#8220;Why do you eat and drink with tax collectors and sinners?&#8221;</div><div class="p"> 31Jesus answered them, &#8220;It is not the healthy who need a doctor, but the sick. 32I have not come to call the righteous, but sinners to repentance.&#8221;</div><div class="s1">Jesus Questioned About Fasting</div><div class="p"> 33They said to him, &#8220;John&#8217;s disciples often fast and pray, and so do the disciples of the Pharisees, but yours go on eating and drinking.&#8221;</div><div class="p"> 34Jesus answered, &#8220;Can you make the friends of the bridegroom fast while he is with them? 35But the time will come when the bridegroom will be taken from them; in those days they will fast.&#8221;</div><div class="p"> 36He told them this parable: &#8220;No one tears a piece out of a new garment to patch an old one. Otherwise, they will have torn the new garment, and the patch from the new will not match the old. 37And no one pours new wine into old wineskins. Otherwise, the new wine will burst the skins; the wine will run out and the wineskins will be ruined. 38No, new wine must be poured into new wineskins. 39And no one after drinking old wine wants the new, for they say, &#8216;The old is better.&#8217;&#8198;&#8221;</div>
