         <div class="label">8</div><div class="s1"><span class="heading">The Shunammite&#8217;s Land Restored</span></div><div class="p"><span class="content">  </span><span class="verse v1" data-usfm="2KI.8.1"><span class="label">1</span><span class="content">Now Elisha had said to the woman whose son he had restored to life, &#8220;Go away with your family and stay for a while wherever you can, because the </span><span class="nd"><span class="content">Lord</span></span><span class="content"> has decreed a famine in the land that will last seven years.&#8221; </span></span><span class="verse v2" data-usfm="2KI.8.2"><span class="label">2</span><span class="content">The woman proceeded to do as the man of God said. She and her family went away and stayed in the land of the Philistines seven years.</span></span></div><div class="p"><span class="verse v2" data-usfm="2KI.8.2"><span class="content">  </span></span><span class="verse v3" data-usfm="2KI.8.3"><span class="label">3</span><span class="content">At the end of the seven years she came back from the land of the Philistines and went to appeal to the king for her house and land. </span></span><span class="verse v4" data-usfm="2KI.8.4"><span class="label">4</span><span class="content">The king was talking to Gehazi, the servant of the man of God, and had said, &#8220;Tell me about all the great things Elisha has done.&#8221; </span></span><span class="verse v5" data-usfm="2KI.8.5"><span class="label">5</span><span class="content">Just as Gehazi was telling the king how Elisha had restored the dead to life, the woman whose son Elisha had brought back to life came to appeal to the king for her house and land.</span></span></div><div class="p"><span class="verse v5" data-usfm="2KI.8.5"><span class="content">Gehazi said, &#8220;This is the woman, my lord the king, and this is her son whom Elisha restored to life.&#8221; </span></span><span class="verse v6" data-usfm="2KI.8.6"><span class="label">6</span><span class="content">The king asked the woman about it, and she told him.</span></span></div><div class="p"><span class="verse v6" data-usfm="2KI.8.6"><span class="content">Then he assigned an official to her case and said to him, &#8220;Give back everything that belonged to her, including all the income from her land from the day she left the country until now.&#8221;</span></span></div><div class="s1"><span class="heading">Hazael Murders Ben-Hadad</span></div><div class="p"><span class="verse v6" data-usfm="2KI.8.6"><span class="content">  </span></span><span class="verse v7" data-usfm="2KI.8.7"><span class="label">7</span><span class="content">Elisha went to Damascus, and Ben-Hadad king of Aram was ill. When the king was told, &#8220;The man of God has come all the way up here,&#8221; </span></span><span class="verse v8" data-usfm="2KI.8.8"><span class="label">8</span><span class="content">he said to Hazael, &#8220;Take a gift with you and go to meet the man of God. Consult the </span><span class="nd"><span class="content">Lord</span></span><span class="content"> through him; ask him, &#8216;Will I recover from this illness?&#8217;&#8198;&#8221;</span></span></div><div class="p"><span class="verse v8" data-usfm="2KI.8.8"><span class="content">  </span></span><span class="verse v9" data-usfm="2KI.8.9"><span class="label">9</span><span class="content">Hazael went to meet Elisha, taking with him as a gift forty camel-loads of all the finest wares of Damascus. He went in and stood before him, and said, &#8220;Your son Ben-Hadad king of Aram has sent me to ask, &#8216;Will I recover from this illness?&#8217;&#8198;&#8221;</span></span></div><div class="p"><span class="verse v9" data-usfm="2KI.8.9"><span class="content">  </span></span><span class="verse v10" data-usfm="2KI.8.10"><span class="label">10</span><span class="content">Elisha answered, &#8220;Go and say to him, &#8216;You will certainly recover.&#8217; Nevertheless,</span><span class="note f"><span class="label">#</span><span class=" body"><span class="fr">8:10 </span><span class="ft">The Hebrew may also be read </span><span class="fqa">Go and say, &#8216;You will certainly not recover,&#8217; for.</span></span></span><span class="content"> the </span><span class="nd"><span class="content">Lord</span></span><span class="content"> has revealed to me that he will in fact die.&#8221; </span></span><span class="verse v11" data-usfm="2KI.8.11"><span class="label">11</span><span class="content">He stared at him with a fixed gaze until Hazael was embarrassed. Then the man of God began to weep.</span></span></div><div class="p"><span class="verse v11" data-usfm="2KI.8.11"><span class="content">  </span></span><span class="verse v12" data-usfm="2KI.8.12"><span class="label">12</span><span class="content">&#8220;Why is my lord weeping?&#8221; asked Hazael.</span></span></div><div class="p"><span class="verse v12" data-usfm="2KI.8.12"><span class="content">&#8220;Because I know the harm you will do to the Israelites,&#8221; he answered. &#8220;You will set fire to their fortified places, kill their young men with the sword, dash their little children to the ground, and rip open their pregnant women.&#8221;</span></span></div><div class="p"><span class="verse v12" data-usfm="2KI.8.12"><span class="content">  </span></span><span class="verse v13" data-usfm="2KI.8.13"><span class="label">13</span><span class="content">Hazael said, &#8220;How could your servant, a mere dog, accomplish such a feat?&#8221;</span></span></div><div class="p"><span class="verse v13" data-usfm="2KI.8.13"><span class="content">&#8220;The </span><span class="nd"><span class="content">Lord</span></span><span class="content"> has shown me that you will become king of Aram,&#8221; answered Elisha.</span></span></div><div class="p"><span class="verse v13" data-usfm="2KI.8.13"><span class="content">  </span></span><span class="verse v14" data-usfm="2KI.8.14"><span class="label">14</span><span class="content">Then Hazael left Elisha and returned to his master. When Ben-Hadad asked, &#8220;What did Elisha say to you?&#8221; Hazael replied, &#8220;He told me that you would certainly recover.&#8221; </span></span><span class="verse v15" data-usfm="2KI.8.15"><span class="label">15</span><span class="content">But the next day he took a thick cloth, soaked it in water and spread it over the king&#8217;s face, so that he died. Then Hazael succeeded him as king.</span></span></div><div class="s1"><span class="heading">Jehoram King of Judah</span></div><div class="p"><span class="verse v15" data-usfm="2KI.8.15"><span class="content">  </span></span><span class="verse v16" data-usfm="2KI.8.16"><span class="label">16</span><span class="content">In the fifth year of Joram son of Ahab king of Israel, when Jehoshaphat was king of Judah, Jehoram son of Jehoshaphat began his reign as king of Judah. </span></span><span class="verse v17" data-usfm="2KI.8.17"><span class="label">17</span><span class="content">He was thirty-two years old when he became king, and he reigned in Jerusalem eight years. </span></span><span class="verse v18" data-usfm="2KI.8.18"><span class="label">18</span><span class="content">He followed the ways of the kings of Israel, as the house of Ahab had done, for he married a daughter of Ahab. He did evil in the eyes of the </span><span class="nd"><span class="content">Lord</span></span><span class="content">. </span></span><span class="verse v19" data-usfm="2KI.8.19"><span class="label">19</span><span class="content">Nevertheless, for the sake of his servant David, the </span><span class="nd"><span class="content">Lord</span></span><span class="content"> was not willing to destroy Judah. He had promised to maintain a lamp for David and his descendants forever.</span></span></div><div class="p"><span class="verse v19" data-usfm="2KI.8.19"><span class="content">  </span></span><span class="verse v20" data-usfm="2KI.8.20"><span class="label">20</span><span class="content">In the time of Jehoram, Edom rebelled against Judah and set up its own king. </span></span><span class="verse v21" data-usfm="2KI.8.21"><span class="label">21</span><span class="content">So Jehoram</span><span class="note f"><span class="label">#</span><span class=" body"><span class="fr">8:21 </span><span class="ft">Hebrew </span><span class="fqa">Joram, </span><span class="ft">a variant of </span><span class="fq">Jehoram</span><span class="ft">; also in verses 23 and 24</span></span></span><span class="content"> went to Zair with all his chariots. The Edomites surrounded him and his chariot commanders, but he rose up and broke through by night; his army, however, fled back home. </span></span><span class="verse v22" data-usfm="2KI.8.22"><span class="label">22</span><span class="content">To this day Edom has been in rebellion against Judah. Libnah revolted at the same time.</span></span></div><div class="p"><span class="verse v22" data-usfm="2KI.8.22"><span class="content">  </span></span><span class="verse v23" data-usfm="2KI.8.23"><span class="label">23</span><span class="content">As for the other events of Jehoram&#8217;s reign, and all he did, are they not written in the book of the annals of the kings of Judah? </span></span><span class="verse v24" data-usfm="2KI.8.24"><span class="label">24</span><span class="content">Jehoram rested with his ancestors and was buried with them in the City of David. And Ahaziah his son succeeded him as king.</span></span></div><div class="s1"><span class="heading">Ahaziah King of Judah</span></div><div class="p"><span class="verse v24" data-usfm="2KI.8.24"><span class="content">  </span></span><span class="verse v25" data-usfm="2KI.8.25"><span class="label">25</span><span class="content">In the twelfth year of Joram son of Ahab king of Israel, Ahaziah son of Jehoram king of Judah began to reign. </span></span><span class="verse v26" data-usfm="2KI.8.26"><span class="label">26</span><span class="content">Ahaziah was twenty-two years old when he became king, and he reigned in Jerusalem one year. His mother&#8217;s name was Athaliah, a granddaughter of Omri king of Israel. </span></span><span class="verse v27" data-usfm="2KI.8.27"><span class="label">27</span><span class="content">He followed the ways of the house of Ahab and did evil in the eyes of the </span><span class="nd"><span class="content">Lord</span></span><span class="content">, as the house of Ahab had done, for he was related by marriage to Ahab&#8217;s family.</span></span></div><div class="p"><span class="verse v27" data-usfm="2KI.8.27"><span class="content">  </span></span><span class="verse v28" data-usfm="2KI.8.28"><span class="label">28</span><span class="content">Ahaziah went with Joram son of Ahab to war against Hazael king of Aram at Ramoth Gilead. The Arameans wounded Joram; </span></span><span class="verse v29" data-usfm="2KI.8.29"><span class="label">29</span><span class="content">so King Joram returned to Jezreel to recover from the wounds the Arameans had inflicted on him at Ramoth</span><span class="note f"><span class="label">#</span><span class=" body"><span class="fr">8:29 </span><span class="ft">Hebrew </span><span class="fqa">Ramah, </span><span class="ft">a variant of </span><span class="fq">Ramoth</span></span></span><span class="content"> in his battle with Hazael king of Aram.</span></span></div><div class="p"><span class="verse v29" data-usfm="2KI.8.29"><span class="content">Then Ahaziah son of Jehoram king of Judah went down to Jezreel to see Joram son of Ahab, because he had been wounded.</span></span></div>

And Jehoram his son succeeded him as king. </span></span><span class="verse v2" data-usfm="2CH.21.2"><span class="label">2</span><span class="content">Jehoram&#8217;s brothers, the sons of Jehoshaphat, were Azariah, Jehiel, Zechariah, Azariahu, Michael and Shephatiah. All these were sons of Jehoshaphat king of Israel.</span><span class="note f"><span class="label">#</span><span class=" body"><span class="fr">21:2 </span><span class="ft">That is, Judah, as frequently in 2 Chronicles</span></span></span><span class="content">  </span></span><span class="verse v3" data-usfm="2CH.21.3"><span class="label">3</span><span class="content">Their father had given them many gifts of silver and gold and articles of value, as well as fortified cities in Judah, but he had given the kingdom to Jehoram because he was his firstborn son.</span></span></div><div class="s1"><span class="heading">Jehoram King of Judah</span></div><div class="p"><span class="verse v3" data-usfm="2CH.21.3"><span class="content">  </span></span><span class="verse v4" data-usfm="2CH.21.4"><span class="label">4</span><span class="content">When Jehoram established himself firmly over his father&#8217;s kingdom, he put all his brothers to the sword along with some of the officials of Israel. </span></span><span class="verse v5" data-usfm="2CH.21.5"><span class="label">5</span><span class="content">Jehoram was thirty-two years old when he became king, and he reigned in Jerusalem eight years. </span></span><span class="verse v6" data-usfm="2CH.21.6"><span class="label">6</span><span class="content">He followed the ways of the kings of Israel, as the house of Ahab had done, for he married a daughter of Ahab. You have also murdered your own brothers, members of your own family, men who were better than you. </span></span><span class="verse v14" data-usfm="2CH.21.14"><span class="label">14</span><span class="content">So now the </span><span class="nd"><span class="content">Lord</span></span><span class="content"> is about to strike your people, your sons, your wives and everything that is yours, with a heavy blow. </span></span><span class="verse v15" data-usfm="2CH.21.15"><span class="label">15</span><span class="content">You yourself will be very ill with a lingering disease of the bowels, until the disease causes your bowels to come out.&#8217;&#8198;&#8221;</span></span></div><div class="p"><span class="verse v15" data-usfm="2CH.21.15"><span class="content">  </span></span><span class="verse v16" data-usfm="2CH.21.16"><span class="label">16</span><span class="content">The </span><span class="nd"><span class="content">Lord</span></span><span class="content"> aroused against Jehoram the hostility of the Philistines and of the Arabs who lived near the Cushites. </span></span><span class="verse v17" data-usfm="2CH.21.17"><span class="label">17</span><span class="content">They attacked Judah, invaded it and carried off all the goods found in the king&#8217;s palace, together with his sons and wives. Not a son was left to him except Ahaziah,</span><span class="note f"><span class="label">#</span><span class=" body"><span class="fr">21:17 </span><span class="ft">Hebrew </span><span class="fqa">Jehoahaz, </span><span class="ft">a variant of </span><span class="fq">Ahaziah</span></span></span><span class="content"> the youngest.</span></span></div><div class="p"><span class="verse v17" data-usfm="2CH.21.17"><span class="content">  </span></span><span class="verse v18" data-usfm="2CH.21.18"><span class="label">18</span><span class="content">After all this, the </span><span class="nd"><span class="content">Lord</span></span><span class="content"> afflicted Jehoram with an incurable disease of the bowels. </span></span><span class="verse v19" data-usfm="2CH.21.19"><span class="label">19</span><span class="content">In the course of time, at the end of the second year, his bowels came out because of the disease, and he died in great pain. His people made no funeral fire in his honor, as they had for his predecessors.</span></span></div><div class="p"><span class="verse v19" data-usfm="2CH.21.19"><span class="content">  </span></span><span class="verse v20" data-usfm="2CH.21.20"><span class="label">20</span><span class="content">Jehoram was thirty-two years old when he became king, and he reigned in Jerusalem eight years. class="content">Terrified at her torment, they will stand far off and cry:</span></span></div><div class="q1"><span class="verse v10" data-usfm="REV.18.10"><span All your luxury and splendor have vanished, never to be recovered.&#8217; </span></span><span class="verse v15" data-usfm="REV.18.15"><span class="label">15</span><span class="content">The merchants who sold these things and gained their wealth from her will stand far off, terrified at her torment. They will weep and mourn </span></span><span class="verse v16" data-usfm="REV.18.16"><span class="label">16</span><span class="content">and cry out:</span></span></div><div class="q1"><span class="verse v16" data-usfm="REV.18.16"><span class="content">&#8220;&#8198;&#8216;Woe! Woe to you, great city,</span></span></div><div class="q2"><span class="verse v19" data-usfm="REV.18.19"><span class="content">where all who had ships on the sea</span></span></div><div class="q2"><span class="verse v19" data-usfm="REV.18.19"><span class="content">became rich through her wealth!</span></span></div><div class="q1"><span class="verse v19" data-usfm="REV.18.19"><span class="content">In one hour she has been brought to ruin!&#8217;</span></span></div><div class="b"></div><div class="q1"><span class="verse v19" data-usfm="REV.18.19"><span class="content">  </span></span><span class="verse v20" data-usfm="REV.18.20"><span class="label">20</span><span class="content">&#8220;Rejoice over her, you heavens!</span></span></div><div class="q2"><span class="verse v20" data-usfm="REV.18.20"><span class="content">Rejoice, you people of God!</span></span></div><div class="q2"><span class="verse v20" data-usfm="REV.18.20"><span class="content">Rejoice, apostles and prophets!</span></span></div><div class="q1"><span class="verse v20" data-usfm="REV.18.20"><span class="content">For God has judged her</span></span></div><div class="q2"><span class="verse v20" data-usfm="REV.18.20"><span class="content">with the judgment she imposed on you.&#8221;</span></span></div><div class="s1"><span class="heading">The Finality of Babylon&#8217;s Doom</span></div><div class="p"><span class="verse v20" data-usfm="REV.18.20"><span class="content">  </span></span><span class="verse v21" data-usfm="REV.18.21"><span class="label">21</span><span class="content">Then a mighty angel picked up a boulder the size of a large millstone and threw it into the sea, and said:</span></span></div><div class="q1"><span class="verse v21" data-usfm="REV.18.21"><span class="content">&#8220;With such violence</span></span></div><div class="q2"><span class="verse v21" data-usfm="REV.18.21"><span class="content">the great city of Babylon will be thrown down,</span></span></div><div class="q2"><span class="verse v21" data-usfm="REV.18.21"><span class="content">never to be found again.</span></span></div><div class="q1"><span class="verse v21" data-usfm="REV.18.21"><span class="content">  </span></span><span class="verse v22" data-usfm="REV.18.22"><span class="label">22</span><span class="content">The music of harpists and musicians, pipers and trumpeters,</span></span></div><div class="q2"><span class="verse v22" data-usfm="REV.18.22"><span class="content">will never be heard in you again.</span></span></div><div class="q1"><span class="verse v22" data-usfm="REV.18.22"><span class="content">No worker of any trade</span></span></div><div class="q2"><span class="verse v22" data-usfm="REV.18.22"><span class="content">will ever be found in you again.</span></span></div><div class="q1"><span class="verse v22" data-usfm="REV.18.22"><span class="content">The sound of a millstone</span></span></div><div class="q2"><span class="verse v22" data-usfm="REV.18.22"><span class="content">will never be heard in you again.</span></span></div><div class="q1"><span class="verse v22" data-usfm="REV.18.22"><span class="content">  </span></span><span class="verse v23" data-usfm="REV.18.23"><span class="label">23</span><span class="content">The light of a lamp</span></span></div><div class="q2"><span class="verse v23" data-usfm="REV.18.23"><span class="content">will never shine in you again.</span></span></div><div class="q1"><span class="verse v23" data-usfm="REV.18.23"><span class="content">The voice of bridegroom and bride</span></span></div><div class="q2"><span class="verse v23" data-usfm="REV.18.23"><span class="content">will never be heard in you again.</span></span></div><div class="q1"><span class="verse v23" data-usfm="REV.18.23"><span class="content">Your merchants were the world&#8217;s important people.</span></span></div><div class="q2"><span class="verse v23" data-usfm="REV.18.23"><span class="content">By your magic spell all the nations were led astray.</span></span></div><div class="q1"><span class="verse v23" data-usfm="REV.18.23"><span class="content">  </span></span><span class="verse v24" data-usfm="REV.18.24"><span class="label">24</span><span class="content">In her was found the blood of prophets and of God&#8217;s holy people,</span></span></div><div class="q2"><span class="verse v24" data-usfm="REV.18.24"><span class="content">of all who have been slaughtered on the earth.&#8221;</span></span></div>

         <div class="label">24</div><div class="s1"><span class="heading">Jesus Has Risen</span></div><div class="p"><span class="content">  </span><span class="verse v1" data-usfm="LUK.24.1"><span class="label">1</span><span class="content">On the first day of the week, very early in the morning, the women took the spices they had prepared and went to the tomb. </span></span><span class="verse v2" data-usfm="LUK.24.2"><span class="label">2</span><span class="content">They found the stone rolled away from the tomb, </span></span><span class="verse v3" data-usfm="LUK.24.3"><span class="label">3</span><span class="content">but when they entered, they did not find the body of the Lord Jesus. </span></span><span class="verse v4" data-usfm="LUK.24.4"><span class="label">4</span><span class="content">While they were wondering about this, suddenly two men in clothes that gleamed like lightning stood beside them. </span></span><span class="verse v5" data-usfm="LUK.24.5"><span class="label">5</span><span class="content">In their fright the women bowed down with their faces to the ground, but the men said to them, &#8220;Why do you look for the living among the dead? </span></span><span class="verse v6" data-usfm="LUK.24.6"><span class="label">6</span><span class="content">He is not here; he has risen! Remember how he told you, while he was still with you in Galilee: </span></span><span class="verse v7" data-usfm="LUK.24.7"><span class="label">7</span><span class="wj"><span class="content">&#8216;The Son of Man must be delivered over to the hands of sinners, be crucified and on the third day be raised again.&#8217;</span></span><span class="content"> &#8221; </span></span><span class="verse v8" data-usfm="LUK.24.8"><span class="label">8</span><span class="content">Then they remembered his words.</span></span></div><div class="p"><span class="verse v8" data-usfm="LUK.24.8"><span class="content">  </span></span><span class="verse v9" data-usfm="LUK.24.9"><span class="label">9</span><span class="content">When they came back from the tomb, they told all these things to the Eleven and to all the others. </span></span><span class="verse v10" data-usfm="LUK.24.10"><span class="label">10</span><span class="content">It was Mary Magdalene, Joanna, Mary the mother of James, and the others with them who told this to the apostles. </span></span><span class="verse v11" data-usfm="LUK.24.11"><span class="label">11</span><span class="content">But they did not believe the women, because their words seemed to them like nonsense. </span></span><span class="verse v12" data-usfm="LUK.24.12"><span class="label">12</span><span class="content">Peter, however, got up and ran to the tomb. Bending over, he saw the strips of linen lying by themselves, and he went away, wondering to himself what had happened.</span></span></div><div class="s1"><span class="heading">On the Road to Emmaus</span></div><div class="p"><span class="verse v12" data-usfm="LUK.24.12"><span class="content">  </span></span><span class="verse v13" data-usfm="LUK.24.13"><span class="label">13</span><span class="content">Now that same day two of them were going to a village called Emmaus, about seven miles</span><span class="note f"><span class="label">#</span><span class=" body"><span class="fr">24:13 </span><span class="ft">Or about 11 kilometers</span></span></span><span class="content"> from Jerusalem. </span></span><span class="verse v14" data-usfm="LUK.24.14"><span class="label">14</span><span class="content">They were talking with each other about everything that had happened. </span></span><span class="verse v15" data-usfm="LUK.24.15"><span class="label">15</span><span class="content">As they talked and discussed these things with each other, Jesus himself came up and walked along with them; </span></span><span class="verse v16" data-usfm="LUK.24.16"><span class="label">16</span><span class="content">but they were kept from recognizing him.</span></span></div><div class="p"><span class="verse v16" data-usfm="LUK.24.16"><span class="content">  </span></span><span class="verse v17" data-usfm="LUK.24.17"><span class="label">17</span><span class="content">He asked them, </span><span class="wj"><span class="content">&#8220;What are you discussing together as you walk along?&#8221;</span></span></span></div><div class="p"><span class="verse v17" data-usfm="LUK.24.17"><span class="content">They stood still, their faces downcast. </span></span><span class="verse v18" data-usfm="LUK.24.18"><span class="label">18</span><span class="content">One of them, named Cleopas, asked him, &#8220;Are you the only one visiting Jerusalem who does not know the things that have happened there in these days?&#8221;</span></span></div><div class="p"><span class="verse v18" data-usfm="LUK.24.18"><span class="content">  </span></span><span class="verse v19" data-usfm="LUK.24.19"><span class="label">19</span><span class="content">  </span><span class="wj"><span class="content">&#8220;What things?&#8221;</span></span><span class="content"> he asked.</span></span></div><div class="p"><span class="verse v19" data-usfm="LUK.24.19"><span class="content">&#8220;About Jesus of Nazareth,&#8221; they replied. &#8220;He was a prophet, powerful in word and deed before God and all the people. </span></span><span class="verse v20" data-usfm="LUK.24.20"><span class="label">20</span><span class="content">The chief priests and our rulers handed him over to be sentenced to death, and they crucified him; </span></span><span class="verse v21" data-usfm="LUK.24.21"><span class="label">21</span><span class="content">but we had hoped that he was the one who was going to redeem Israel. And what is more, it is the third day since all this took place. </span></span><span class="verse v22" data-usfm="LUK.24.22"><span class="label">22</span><span class="content">In addition, some of our women amazed us. They went to the tomb early this morning </span></span><span class="verse v23" data-usfm="LUK.24.23"><span class="label">23</span><span class="content">but didn&#8217;t find his body. They came and told us that they had seen a vision of angels, who said he was alive. </span></span><span class="verse v24" data-usfm="LUK.24.24"><span class="label">24</span><span class="content">Then some of our companions went to the tomb and found it just as the women had said, but they did not see Jesus.&#8221;</span></span></div><div class="p"><span class="verse v24" data-usfm="LUK.24.24"><span class="content">  </span></span><span class="verse v25" data-usfm="LUK.24.25"><span class="label">25</span><span class="content">He said to them, </span><span class="wj"><span class="content">&#8220;How foolish you are, and how slow to believe all that the prophets have spoken!</span></span><span class="content">  </span></span><span class="verse v26" data-usfm="LUK.24.26"><span class="label">26</span><span class="wj"><span class="content">Did not the Messiah have to suffer these things and then enter his glory?&#8221;</span></span><span class="content">  </span></span><span class="verse v27" data-usfm="LUK.24.27"><span class="label">27</span><span class="content">And beginning with Moses and all the Prophets, he explained to them what was said in all the Scriptures concerning himself.</span></span></div><div class="p"><span class="verse v27" data-usfm="LUK.24.27"><span class="content">  </span></span><span class="verse v28" data-usfm="LUK.24.28"><span class="label">28</span><span class="content">As they approached the village to which they were going, Jesus continued on as if he were going farther. </span></span><span class="verse v29" data-usfm="LUK.24.29"><span class="label">29</span><span class="content">But they urged him strongly, &#8220;Stay with us, for it is nearly evening; the day is almost over.&#8221; So he went in to stay with them.</span></span></div><div class="p"><span class="verse v29" data-usfm="LUK.24.29"><span class="content">  </span></span><span class="verse v30" data-usfm="LUK.24.30"><span class="label">30</span><span class="content">When he was at the table with them, he took bread, gave thanks, broke it and began to give it to them. </span></span><span class="verse v31" data-usfm="LUK.24.31"><span class="label">31</span><span class="content">Then their eyes were opened and they recognized him, and he disappeared from their sight. </span></span><span class="verse v32" data-usfm="LUK.24.32"><span class="label">32</span><span class="content">They asked each other, &#8220;Were not our hearts burning within us while he talked with us on the road and opened the Scriptures to us?&#8221;</span></span></div><div class="p"><span class="verse v32" data-usfm="LUK.24.32"><span class="content">  </span></span><span class="verse v33" data-usfm="LUK.24.33"><span class="label">33</span><span class="content">They got up and returned at once to Jerusalem. There they found the Eleven and those with them, assembled together </span></span><span class="verse v34" data-usfm="LUK.24.34"><span class="label">34</span><span class="content">and saying, &#8220;It is true! The Lord has risen and has appeared to Simon.&#8221; </span></span><span class="verse v35" data-usfm="LUK.24.35"><span class="label">35</span><span class="content">Then the two told what had happened on the way, and how Jesus was recognized by them when he broke the bread.</span></span></div><div class="s1"><span class="heading">Jesus Appears to the Disciples</span></div><div class="p"><span class="verse v35" data-usfm="LUK.24.35"><span class="content">  </span></span><span class="verse v36" data-usfm="LUK.24.36"><span class="label">36</span><span class="content">While they were still talking about this, Jesus himself stood among them and said to them, </span><span class="wj"><span class="content">&#8220;Peace be with you.&#8221;</span></span></span></div><div class="p"><span class="verse v36" data-usfm="LUK.24.36"><span class="content">  </span></span><span class="verse v37" data-usfm="LUK.24.37"><span class="label">37</span><span class="content">They were startled and frightened, thinking they saw a ghost. </span></span><span class="verse v38" data-usfm="LUK.24.38"><span class="label">38</span><span class="content">He said to them, </span><span class="wj"><span class="content">&#8220;Why are you troubled, and why do doubts rise in your minds?</span></span><span class="content">  </span></span><span class="verse v39" data-usfm="LUK.24.39"><span class="label">39</span><span class="wj"><span class="content">Look at my hands and my feet. It is I myself! Touch me and see; a ghost does not have flesh and bones, as you see I have.&#8221;</span></span></span></div><div class="p"><span class="verse v39" data-usfm="LUK.24.39"><span class="content">  </span></span><span class="verse v40" data-usfm="LUK.24.40"><span class="label">40</span><span class="content">When he had said this, he showed them his hands and feet. </span></span><span class="verse v41" data-usfm="LUK.24.41"><span class="label">41</span><span class="content">And while they still did not believe it because of joy and amazement, he asked them, </span><span class="wj"><span class="content">&#8220;Do you have anything here to eat?&#8221;</span></span><span class="content">  </span></span><span class="verse v42" data-usfm="LUK.24.42"><span class="label">42</span><span class="content">They gave him a piece of broiled fish, </span></span><span class="verse v43" data-usfm="LUK.24.43"><span class="label">43</span><span class="content">and he took it and ate it in their presence.</span></span></div><div class="p"><span class="verse v43" data-usfm="LUK.24.43"><span class="content">  </span></span><span class="verse v44" data-usfm="LUK.24.44"><span class="label">44</span><span class="content">He said to them, </span><span class="wj"><span class="content">&#8220;This is what I told you while I was still with you: Everything must be fulfilled that is written about me in the Law of Moses, the Prophets and the Psalms.&#8221;</span></span></span></div><div class="p"><span class="verse v44" data-usfm="LUK.24.44"><span class="content">  </span></span><span class="verse v45" data-usfm="LUK.24.45"><span class="label">45</span><span class="content">Then he opened their minds so they could understand the Scriptures. </span></span><span class="verse v46" data-usfm="LUK.24.46"><span class="label">46</span><span class="content">He told them, </span><span class="wj"><span class="content">&#8220;This is what is written: The Messiah will suffer and rise from the dead on the third day,</span></span><span class="content">  </span></span><span class="verse v47" data-usfm="LUK.24.47"><span class="label">47</span><span class="wj"><span class="content">and repentance for the forgiveness of sins will be preached in his name to all nations, beginning at Jerusalem.</span></span><span class="content">  </span></span><span class="verse v48" data-usfm="LUK.24.48"><span class="label">48</span><span class="wj"><span class="content">You are witnesses of these things.</span></span><span class="content">  </span></span><span class="verse v49" data-usfm="LUK.24.49"><span class="label">49</span><span class="wj"><span class="content">I am going to send you what my Father has promised; but stay in the city until you have been clothed with power from on high.&#8221;</span></span></span></div><div class="s1"><span class="heading">The Ascension of Jesus</span></div><div class="p"><span class="verse v49" data-usfm="LUK.24.49"><span class="content">  </span></span><span class="verse v50" data-usfm="LUK.24.50"><span class="label">50</span><span class="content">When he had led them out to the vicinity of Bethany, he lifted up his hands and blessed them. </span></span><span class="verse v51" data-usfm="LUK.24.51"><span class="label">51</span><span class="content">While he was blessing them, he left them and was taken up into heaven. </span></span><span class="verse v52" data-usfm="LUK.24.52"><span class="label">52</span><span class="content">Then they worshiped him and returned to Jerusalem with great joy. </span></span><span class="verse v53" data-usfm="LUK.24.53"><span class="label">53</span><span class="content">And they stayed continually at the temple, praising God.</span></span></div>
