The Psychology of Tithing: How Tithing Shapes Our Minds and LivesSample

The Psychology of Tithing: How Tithing Shapes Our Minds and Lives

DAY 3 OF 3

Tithing Sets Us Free to Enjoy Life

It turns out that regularly giving away a portion of income through tithing can help people chill out.

Scientists have conducted numerous studies on generosity and satisfaction, and over and over, they see the same crazy pattern: The folks who spend less on themselves but give more to help others end up feeling happier in life.

There was one specific study where researchers had a group of people rate their own happiness levels over time.

They then divided the group into two.

Group A focused only on spending money on wants for themselves, like dinners out or vacations.

Group B spent money only on buying gifts, donating to charity, or helping family and friends.

After 16 weeks, they asked the groups again about their happiness levels.

Group B (who gave to others) reported much higher and lasting happiness over almost five months!

So, tithing provides a way to jump off this money-stuff hamster wheel that leaves us exhausted and unfulfilled.

By letting go of 10% toward God's Kingdom Work, we loosen the chains of greed and impatience weighing us down and are able to begin tapping into true financial freedom in our lives.
