 <div class="p">1Some time later, Jesus went up to Jerusalem for one of the Jewish festivals. 2Now there is in Jerusalem near the Sheep Gate a pool, which in Aramaic is called Bethesda#5:2 Some manuscripts Bethzatha; other manuscripts Bethsaida and which is surrounded by five covered colonnades. 3Here a great number of disabled people used to lie&#8212;the blind, the lame, the paralyzed. [4]#5:3,4 Some manuscripts include here, wholly or in part, paralyzed&#8212;and they waited for the moving of the waters. 4 From time to time an angel of the Lord would come down and stir up the waters. The first one into the pool after each such disturbance would be cured of whatever disease they had. 5One who was there had been an invalid for thirty-eight years. 6When Jesus saw him lying there and learned that he had been in this condition for a long time, he asked him, &#8220;Do you want to get well?&#8221;</div><div class="p"> 7&#8220;Sir,&#8221; the invalid replied, &#8220;I have no one to help me into the pool when the water is stirred. While I am trying to get in, someone else goes down ahead of me.&#8221;</div><div class="p"> 8Then Jesus said to him, &#8220;Get up! Pick up your mat and walk.&#8221; 9At once the man was cured; he picked up his mat and walked.</div><div class="p">The day on which this took place was a Sabbath, 10and so the Jewish leaders said to the man who had been healed, &#8220;It is the Sabbath; the law forbids you to carry your mat.&#8221;</div><div class="p"> 11But he replied, &#8220;The man who made me well said to me, &#8216;Pick up your mat and walk.&#8217; &#8221;</div><div class="p"> 12So they asked him, &#8220;Who is this fellow who told you to pick it up and walk?&#8221;</div><div class="p"> 13The man who was healed had no idea who it was, for Jesus had slipped away into the crowd that was there.</div><div class="p"> 14Later Jesus found him at the temple and said to him, &#8220;See, you are well again. Stop sinning or something worse may happen to you.&#8221; 15The man went away and told the Jewish leaders that it was Jesus who had made him well.</div>

 <div class="p">1Another time Jesus went into the synagogue, and a man with a shriveled hand was there. 2Some of them were looking for a reason to accuse Jesus, so they watched him closely to see if he would heal him on the Sabbath. 3Jesus said to the man with the shriveled hand, &#8220;Stand up in front of everyone.&#8221;</div><div class="p"> 4Then Jesus asked them, &#8220;Which is lawful on the Sabbath: to do good or to do evil, to save life or to kill?&#8221; But they remained silent.</div><div class="p"> 5He looked around at them in anger and, deeply distressed at their stubborn hearts, said to the man, &#8220;Stretch out your hand.&#8221; He stretched it out, and his hand was completely restored. 6Then the Pharisees went out and began to plot with the Herodians how they might kill Jesus.</div><div class="s1">Crowds Follow Jesus</div><div class="p"> 7Jesus withdrew with his disciples to the lake, and a large crowd from Galilee followed. 8When they heard about all he was doing, many people came to him from Judea, Jerusalem, Idumea, and the regions across the Jordan and around Tyre and Sidon. 9Because of the crowd he told his disciples to have a small boat ready for him, to keep the people from crowding him. 10For he had healed many, so that those with diseases were pushing forward to touch him. 11Whenever the impure spirits saw him, they fell down before him and cried out, &#8220;You are the Son of God.&#8221; 12But he gave them strict orders not to tell others about him.</div>

 <div class="p">1When Jesus had finished saying all this to the people who were listening, he entered Capernaum. 2There a centurion&#8217;s servant, whom his master valued highly, was sick and about to die. 3The centurion heard of Jesus and sent some elders of the Jews to him, asking him to come and heal his servant. 4When they came to Jesus, they pleaded earnestly with him, &#8220;This man deserves to have you do this, 5because he loves our nation and has built our synagogue.&#8221; 6So Jesus went with them.</div><div class="p">He was not far from the house when the centurion sent friends to say to him: &#8220;Lord, don&#8217;t trouble yourself, for I do not deserve to have you come under my roof. 7That is why I did not even consider myself worthy to come to you. But say the word, and my servant will be healed. 8For I myself am a man under authority, with soldiers under me. I tell this one, &#8216;Go,&#8217; and he goes; and that one, &#8216;Come,&#8217; and he comes. I say to my servant, &#8216;Do this,&#8217; and he does it.&#8221;</div><div class="p"> 9When Jesus heard this, he was amazed at him, and turning to the crowd following him, he said, &#8220;I tell you, I have not found such great faith even in Israel.&#8221; 10Then the men who had been sent returned to the house and found the servant well.</div><div class="s1">Jesus Raises a Widow&#8217;s Son</div><div class="p"> 11Soon afterward, Jesus went to a town called Nain, and his disciples and a large crowd went along with him. 12As he approached the town gate, a dead person was being carried out&#8212;the only son of his mother, and she was a widow. And a large crowd from the town was with her. 13When the Lord saw her, his heart went out to her and he said, &#8220;Don&#8217;t cry.&#8221;</div><div class="p"> 14Then he went up and touched the bier they were carrying him on, and the bearers stood still. He said, &#8220;Young man, I say to you, get up!&#8221; 15The dead man sat up and began to talk, and Jesus gave him back to his mother.</div><div class="p"> 16They were all filled with awe and praised God. &#8220;A great prophet has appeared among us,&#8221; they said. &#8220;God has come to help his people.&#8221; 17This news about Jesus spread throughout Judea and the surrounding country.</div>
