Five Purposes of Prayer

DAY 2 OF 6

Day 2 - Divine Fellowship

A wise marriage counsellor once said that communication is the blood of every relationship. In other words, every relationship thrives only as much as the parties involved are communicating. I’ve found this to be true. However, this theory didn’t originate from the world or even psychology. Instead, God originated it.

When God created man, He usually visited him in the cool of the day in the garden of Eden [(symbolically, His presence) – see Genesis 3:8]. Adam didn’t need to pray to connect to God because he was in the divine presence. Now, things are different. The fall took out this presence. After all, sin entered the world (see Romans 5:12). So today, to draw near to God, you have to initiate it. I’m not talking about getting saved. No! If it were that, I would be wrong because God has sent people as Christ’s ambassadors to spread the message of reconciliation (see 2 Corinthians 5:20). What I’m speaking of is the believer drawing closer to God. That requires labour from you first.

James 4:8 (NKJV) says,

“Draw near to God and He will draw near to you. Cleanse your hands, you sinners; and purify your hearts, you double-minded.”

See that! Before God will draw near to you, you must draw near to Him first. On top of that, you must cleanse your life of all forms of distractions that allow your intimacy with God to be possible. Is it a busy schedule that’s making you find it difficult to have some time alone with God, especially in prayer? There’s always a way to reduce that load. You just have to ask God for wisdom for it. Maybe, you’ve got to delegate certain things to others or disassociate from people or groups who waste your time and money.

As a believer, always remember that since the day you got born again, you’re married to Jesus because you become a part of His bride – the Church. So, failure to commune with Him is a disservice to you. Don’t forget that if you lose everything and everybody but you don’t lose God, you’re still a winner. Start working on creating a meaningful time to spend with God.
