What does your warning light show?

I don’t know about you, but I am always excited for a new and fresh start.

Last week, the “check engine” light came on in my car. A little orange symbol appeared on the control panel of my vehicle and my first thought was, “How much is this going to cost to fix?” Life’s little inconveniences are never...convenient!

After a few moments, I began to think with a different perspective. This little engine indicator was a reflection of all the miles my car had transported me without issue in the past, it was a warning to take care of the issue right now in the present, and it reminded me that if I did check the engine, my future transportation would be assured. I did a reset in my mind and suddenly, the light was a blessing!

Listen to King David change his perspective in the song we know as Psalm 42:

“I say to God my Rock, ‘Why have you forgotten me? Why must I go about mourning, oppressed by the enemy? My bones suffer mortal agony as my foes taunt me, saying to me all day long, ‘Where is your God?’ Why are you downcast, O my soul? Why so disturbed within me? Put your hope in God, for I will yet praise him, my Savior and my God.” (Psalm 42:9-11, NIV)

David starts out with a series of questions. And don’t we all ask these questions?

• Why have you forgotten me?
• Where are you God?
• Why is my soul so downcast?

These are all valid questions that often come up when the “engine” of our soul is experiencing a breakdown.

But, then David changes his perspective and changes his dialogue. Just like the “check engine” light in my car changed from a problem to a blessing, David shifts his thinking away from the problem and to the promise of the presence of God.

Put your hope in God, for I will yet praise Him, my Savior and my God!
