 <div class="p">1Sarah lived to be a hundred and twenty-seven years old. 2She died at Kiriath Arba (that is, Hebron) in the land of Canaan, and Abraham went to mourn for Sarah and to weep over her.</div><div class="p"> 3Then Abraham rose from beside his dead wife and spoke to the Hittites.#23:3 Or the descendants of Heth; also in verses 5, 7, 10, 16, 18 and 20 He said, 4&#8220;I am a foreigner and stranger among you. Sell me some property for a burial site here so I can bury my dead.&#8221;</div><div class="p"> 5The Hittites replied to Abraham, 6&#8220;Sir, listen to us. You are a mighty prince among us. Bury your dead in the choicest of our tombs. None of us will refuse you his tomb for burying your dead.&#8221;</div><div class="p"> 7Then Abraham rose and bowed down before the people of the land, the Hittites. 8He said to them, &#8220;If you are willing to let me bury my dead, then listen to me and intercede with Ephron son of Zohar on my behalf 9so he will sell me the cave of Machpelah, which belongs to him and is at the end of his field. Ask him to sell it to me for the full price as a burial site among you.&#8221;</div><div class="p"> 10Ephron the Hittite was sitting among his people and he replied to Abraham in the hearing of all the Hittites who had come to the gate of his city. 11&#8220;No, my lord,&#8221; he said. &#8220;Listen to me; I give#23:11 Or sell you the field, and I give#23:11 Or sell you the cave that is in it. I give#23:11 Or sell it to you in the presence of my people. Bury your dead.&#8221;</div><div class="p"> 12Again Abraham bowed down before the people of the land 13and he said to Ephron in their hearing, &#8220;Listen to me, if you will. I will pay the price of the field. Accept it from me so I can bury my dead there.&#8221;</div><div class="p"> 14Ephron answered Abraham, 15&#8220;Listen to me, my lord; the land is worth four hundred shekels#23:15 That is, about 10 pounds or about 4.6 kilograms of silver, but what is that between you and me? Bury your dead.&#8221;</div><div class="p"> 16Abraham agreed to Ephron&#8217;s terms and weighed out for him the price he had named in the hearing of the Hittites: four hundred shekels of silver, according to the weight current among the merchants.</div><div class="p"> 17So Ephron&#8217;s field in Machpelah near Mamre&#8212;both the field and the cave in it, and all the trees within the borders of the field&#8212;was deeded 18to Abraham as his property in the presence of all the Hittites who had come to the gate of the city. 19Afterward Abraham buried his wife Sarah in the cave in the field of Machpelah near Mamre (which is at Hebron) in the land of Canaan. 20So the field and the cave in it were deeded to Abraham by the Hittites as a burial site.</div>

 <div class="p">28So when the Midianite merchants came by, his brothers pulled Joseph up out of the cistern and sold him for twenty shekels#37:28 That is, about 8 ounces or about 230 grams of silver to the Ishmaelites, who took him to Egypt.</div><div class="p"> 29When Reuben returned to the cistern and saw that Joseph was not there, he tore his clothes. 30He went back to his brothers and said, &#8220;The boy isn&#8217;t there! Where can I turn now?&#8221;</div><div class="p"> 31Then they got Joseph&#8217;s robe, slaughtered a goat and dipped the robe in the blood. 32They took the ornate robe back to their father and said, &#8220;We found this. Examine it to see whether it is your son&#8217;s robe.&#8221;</div><div class="p"> 33He recognized it and said, &#8220;It is my son&#8217;s robe! Some ferocious animal has devoured him. Joseph has surely been torn to pieces.&#8221;</div><div class="p"> 34Then Jacob tore his clothes, put on sackcloth and mourned for his son many days. 35All his sons and daughters came to comfort him, but he refused to be comforted. &#8220;No,&#8221; he said, &#8220;I will continue to mourn until I join my son in the grave.&#8221; So his father wept for him.</div><div class="p"> </div>

When they and their father saw the money pouches, they were frightened. 36Their father Jacob said to them, &#8220;You have deprived me of my children. Joseph is no more and Simeon is no more, and now you want to take Benjamin. Everything is against me!&#8221;</div><div class="p"> 37Then Reuben said to his father, &#8220;You may put both of my sons to death if I do not bring him back to you. Entrust him to my care, and I will bring him back.&#8221;</div><div class="p"> 38But Jacob said, &#8220;My son will not go down there with you; his brother is dead and he is the only one left. If harm comes to him on the journey you are taking, you will bring my gray head down to the grave in sorrow.&#8221;</div>

 <div class="p">1In the days when the judges ruled,#1:1 Traditionally judged there was a famine in the land. So a man from Bethlehem in Judah, together with his wife and two sons, went to live for a while in the country of Moab. 2The man&#8217;s name was Elimelek, his wife&#8217;s name was Naomi, and the names of his two sons were Mahlon and Kilion. They were Ephrathites from Bethlehem, Judah. And they went to Moab and lived there.</div><div class="p"> 3Now Elimelek, Naomi&#8217;s husband, died, and she was left with her two sons. 4They married Moabite women, one named Orpah and the other Ruth. After they had lived there about ten years, 5both Mahlon and Kilion also died, and Naomi was left without her two sons and her husband.</div><div class="s1">Naomi and Ruth Return to Bethlehem</div><div class="p"> 6When Naomi heard in Moab that the Lord had come to the aid of his people by providing food for them, she and her daughters-in-law prepared to return home from there. 7With her two daughters-in-law she left the place where she had been living and set out on the road that would take them back to the land of Judah.</div><div class="p"> 8Then Naomi said to her two daughters-in-law, &#8220;Go back, each of you, to your mother&#8217;s home. May the Lord show you kindness, as you have shown kindness to your dead husbands and to me. 9May the Lord grant that each of you will find rest in the home of another husband.&#8221;</div><div class="p">Then she kissed them goodbye and they wept aloud 10and said to her, &#8220;We will go back with you to your people.&#8221;</div><div class="p"> 11But Naomi said, &#8220;Return home, my daughters. Why would you come with me? Am I going to have any more sons, who could become your husbands? 12Return home, my daughters; I am too old to have another husband. Even if I thought there was still hope for me&#8212;even if I had a husband tonight and then gave birth to sons&#8212; 13would you wait until they grew up? Would you remain unmarried for them? No, my daughters. It is more bitter for me than for you, because the Lord&#8217;s hand has turned against me!&#8221;</div><div class="p"> 14At this they wept aloud again. Then Orpah kissed her mother-in-law goodbye, but Ruth clung to her.</div><div class="p"> 15&#8220;Look,&#8221; said Naomi, &#8220;your sister-in-law is going back to her people and her gods. Go back with her.&#8221;</div><div class="p"> 16But Ruth replied, &#8220;Don&#8217;t urge me to leave you or to turn back from you. Where you go I will go, and where you stay I will stay. Your people will be my people and your God my God. 17Where you die I will die, and there I will be buried. May the Lord deal with me, be it ever so severely, if even death separates you and me.&#8221; 18When Naomi realized that Ruth was determined to go with her, she stopped urging her.</div><div class="p"> 19So the two women went on until they came to Bethlehem. When they arrived in Bethlehem, the whole town was stirred because of them, and the women exclaimed, &#8220;Can this be Naomi?&#8221;</div><div class="p"> 20&#8220;Don&#8217;t call me Naomi,#1:20 Naomi means pleasant.&#8221; she told them. &#8220;Call me Mara,#1:20 Mara means bitter. because the Almighty#1:20 Hebrew Shaddai; also in verse 21 has made my life very bitter. 21I went away full, but the Lord has brought me back empty. Why call me Naomi? The Lord has afflicted#1:21 Or has testified against me; the Almighty has brought misfortune upon me.&#8221;</div><div class="p"> </div>
